It was founded by the Vernon family and, in particular, by Admiral Sir Francis Vernon, who participated in the defeat of the Spanish Armada. In fact, some of the wood in what is known as the Armada room, which was previously used for wedding ceremonies, is said to have come from the salvaged ships of the Spanish fleet.

The ground floor opens with a flagstone entrance hall and three staircases, one of which is currently not in use. The kitchen features a large inglenook fireplace with a built-in oil triple Aga, while the conservatory includes a gun cabinet, safe and fireplace.

Also on the ground floor, the dining room and parlor have fireplaces, while the Armada great room, with its historic woodwork, is to the rear.

The first floor includes six high-ceilinged bedrooms and a large bathroom that used to be another bedroom. The en-suite master bedroom includes dual bathrooms and a large walk-in closet with an exterior foyer, while two of the other bedrooms on the floor have private bathrooms.

The second floor is currently fire damaged and includes an en-suite bedroom which is currently one large open plan area and offers the possibility of a further four bedrooms subject to consent.

In addition, the service quarters, which can be accessed from the main hall through the reception hall on the ground floor, include five rooms that have previously been used as a bathroom, kitchen, living room and two bedrooms with a large storage room and mezzanine. . .

The gardens are a real delight with paddocks, lawns and trees, and you will also find a stable with tack room and hay store, which could be converted to an annex subject to consent. There is also a lily pond with fish and a secret garden with a cabin, and a large central lake that is home to a variety of fish, ducks, herons and other waterfowl.

Another pond to the front next to Holmshaw Lane also has fish and waterfowl, and there is also a tennis court, a WWII concrete bunker and a vegetable garden. The photos also show an outdoor pool with a low diving board.

Estate agent Savills described the room as “magical”. Property agent Jamie Carter said: ‘This is a very rare opportunity to restore this stunning room to its former glory. The room is magical – in need of a complete makeover but offers great potential to create a stunning family home or multiple homes. .subject to planning”.

Millionaire Tony Vernon, no relation to Admiral Sir Francis Vernon, who ran one of the largest independent dairy companies in the country, bought the hall in 1970 and restored it over the next 30 years.

Following his death in 2005, the room was sold for £3 million when it was used for weddings and private events and was run as a hotel. in 2017 Police fought plans to stage ‘bare-knuckle’ boxing event in the hall.

In March 2018, the police were called to investigate a large fire. in the living room and in September of the same year Businessman Mohammed Isaq, who owned the lounge when it was a hotel, was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison after admitting to tax fraud. Isaq, at the time, was serving a 20-month prison sentence after breaking fire safety rules in the saloon.

In December 2019, the room and estate were sold to an undisclosed private owner and it’s already on the market with a guide price of £800,000.
