Often some people start trusting doctors and healers more than doctors in illness. And such prescriptions sometimes prove fatal. One such case of kidney failure after indigenous treatment of diabetes has come to the fore from Delhi’s Sir Gangaram Hospital. Here, 48-year-old Sita Devi, a resident of Ranchi, was admitted to the hospital after vomiting and kidney problem. The woman told that she had eaten raw gallbladder of ‘Rohu’ fish for three days to cure diabetes at the behest of a doctor.
The woman told that a few days after adopting this home remedy, she started having vomiting and severe nausea. Seeing the deteriorating condition of the woman, the family members admitted her to Sir Gangaram Hospital from Delhi. Here the woman was admitted to the nephrology department and two sessions of hemodialysis were done after kidney problems were detected.
Recovery after 2 weeks
The woman’s kidney biopsy revealed severe inflammation. To improve the woman’s condition, she was given high doses of steroids. According to the report, the kidney of the woman started recovering after 7 days and after about two weeks she was discharged from the hospital with normal kidney function.
In many parts of Asia including India, people eat raw gall bladder of fish. This is especially prevalent in eastern and southern India. Traditionally, people believe that eating it can cure many diseases including diabetes, asthma, arthritis, eye related problems. For this, fishes like Rahu (Labio Rohita) and Katla are usually consumed.
Raw gall bladder of fish is dangerous for the body
Dr. A.K. Bhalla said, ‘The risk of kidney failure is not limited to these two species of fish, but eating gall bladders of other types of fish can also cause this problem. That’s why doctors advise people not to eat raw gall bladder of fish. By eating this, a high amount of bile (bile) is produced in our digestive system. Its excessive consumption can be harmful to health.
Actually, there is such a toxic element named Cyprinol in bile, which damages the kidney. If there is a problem in the kidney, the patient feels symptoms like abdominal pain, vomiting and less urine. In this, the kidney of the patient may fail. Even he may die.
Dr. Vaibhav Tiwari, Consultant, Nephrology Department, Sir Gangaram Hospital, said, ‘In view of the problem in the kidneys due to the bile of fish, we forbid people to consume such fish, in which high amounts of bile are found. Also, it is important to ensure that the fish is well cooked. This reduces the level of toxin present inside the fish. If a person feels the symptoms of kidney problem due to fish bile, then he should immediately undergo a medical examination. This includes treatments such as hydration and reducing pain. Along with this, it is also taken care that no other damage is done to the kidney.
