Airbnb takes an ‘anti-party’ stance ahead of Memorial Day weekend

airbnb is issued a “partisan crackdown” for the second year in a row before busy summer holiday weekends, which can sometimes draw rowdy crowds.

The initiative aims to discourage renters from hosting parties in local communities. Airbnb will analyze one- and two-night reservations to determine their level of risk: the last minute of the reservation, positive or negative reviews, distance to listing, and more.

For Memorial Day and July 4th holiday weekends, Airbnb is also enforcing stricter booking criteria, blocking entire trips to high-risk guesthouses and requiring guests to read the no-party policy.

However, Airbnb can only assess risk before the reservation: once the guests arrive, chaos can still ensue. The company is asking neighbors to report concerns to Airbnb’s 24/7 Neighbor Support Line. The line is completely dedicated to listening to locals with “urgent matters” like “a party in progress.”

Earlier this month, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said Bloomberg that a wave of complaints on social media last summer was “sort of a wake-up call.”

The crackdown on Airbnb parties was first introduced for Memorial Day weekend 2022 and then applied for the July 4th long weekend as well.
