On Wednesday, Amazon Pharmacy announced that it is beginning to test rapid delivery of prescription medications using drones in select locations.
“From the early days of medical school we are taught that there is a golden window that matters in clinical medicine,” Dr Vin Guptamedical director of Amazon Pharmacy, said in a company Press release. “That is the time between the time a patient feels unwell and the time he can receive treatment. We’re working hard at Amazon to dramatically reduce the golden window between diagnosis and treatment, and drone delivery marks an important step forward. “Whether it is an infectious or respiratory disease, early intervention can be instrumental in improving patient outcomes.”
Although the company already delivers some prescriptions in two days through Amazon Prime, the drone delivery method takes one hour, according to the company.
“Our drones fly over traffic, eliminating the excess time a customer’s package could spend in transit on the road,” he explained. Calsee Hendrickson, director of product and program management at Prime Air. “That’s the beauty of drone delivery, and medications were the first thing our customers said they wanted to receive quickly via drone as well. “Speed and convenience top the wish list for health shopping.”
Customers in College Station, Texas, are the first to test the service, which Amazon says has already begun.
The drones are programmed to fly from a secure pharmacy to a delivery center and then descend up to 13 feet in a customer’s direction and drop the padded package.
The drones are expected to fly at a height of up to 400 feet. The drone can also check that the area is free of children and pets before dropping the package.
More than 500 medications will be available this way, including treatments for flu and pneumonia, the company said.
The company also plans to add a third location in the US and cities in Italy and the UK to its drone delivery system by the end of 2024. Around that same time, the company will introduce a new drone called the MK30. That drone is smaller, quieter and flies further, the Associated Press reported.
