not all who the wonderful thing is lust. Some of us will form an orderly queue at the One Apple Park Way waiting room on Tuesday morning. At 10am PT on September 12, Tim Cook and co. will be at it again, showcasing the latest in technology ahead of the big Christmas push.
There are two things we can safely say will be on display at the big event: the iPhone 15 and the Apple Watch Series 9. There are some things in this world that you can really set your smartwatch to. There have been many rumors, of course. For one thing, some members of the AirPods family are starting to get old.
Macs are also a perpetual possibility. I think I’m also speaking for most of us when I say it would be nice to get a little more face time with the Vision Pro headset that stole the show at WWDC back in June.
What follows is a mix of what we know, what we think we know, and what we are wildly speculating about.
iPhone 15

The clear marquee ad this time. What is perhaps most interesting about the iPhone 15 is that Apple was forced to do it. Not that anyone on the big glass spaceship was eager to embrace USB-C (or Thunderbolt 3 or whatever you want to call it). You can thank the EU regulators for that. Last year, the european parliament voted to standardize ports across all devices.
Now, those regulators technically gave manufacturers until the end of 2024 to roll out the technology to all devices, but all signs point to Apple pulling back the Band-Aid for the iPhone 15. Among other things, more regional governing bodies are poised. to follow suit. The EU leads this for consumer advocacy and e-waste reasons.
Last September marked the tenth anniversary since Apple forced the Lightning connector into existence. The thing about Lightning, though, is that he’s mean and I hate him. My colleagues hate it. Friends and family hate it. My rabbit likes it, but he’ll happily chew through any wire, no matter what’s on each end. The point is that it is bad and always has been bad.
An interesting caveat here is the report that the faster USB 3.2 data speeds will be reserved for the pro models, with the standard iPhone 15 stuck at USB 2.0 (it’s still a common specification on Android).
Meanwhile, wireless charging is said to increase up to 35W across the board. It looks like the iPhone will be one of the first phones to adopt the Qi2 standard, which combines wireless charging with magnets, something Apple has been doing for a minute. Given that Apple is one of the 344 companies in the Wireless Power Consortium (and all iPhone Qi2 accessories announced at IFA), this seems like a safe bet.
In the meantime, Dynamic Island, introduced on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, should also make its way to the cheaper models.
Another interesting addition is the rumored iPhone 15 Ultra, which would replace the Pro Max and adopt Apple’s recent naming convention. That phone is said to have a 6.7-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, slimmer bezels, and the new “Action” button, which replaces the long standard silent one. The new button, adopted from the Apple Watch Ultra, would also grace the iPhone 15 Pro. It is said to offer several different customizable shortcuts for things like the camera, accessibility options, the flashlight, and the Shortcuts app (if you want to get creative).

Speaking of the Apple Watch. Actually, the rumors have been pretty quiet here. This could well be an indication that this is a relatively bad year for portable devices. It could also be due to the fact that next year is the big 1-0, so Apple can wait until next year to do everything possible. It’s also likely that I’ll wait until next year for a new Apple Watch SE.
That being said, a new Apple Watch Ultra seems to be on the cards for next week. Both the Ultra 2 and Series 9 are likely to get new processors and colors. There has also been talk of Apple considering 3D printing for case design, after adopting the process for elements of the Vision Pro. However, I think there’s still a big question of scale when it comes to something this mass market. like the Apple Watch.

It seems the time is right for some new AirPods. That said, 2024 seems like a more likely date for headphones to get the H2 chip treatment. However, the sale of a standalone USB-C charging case may be in the cards. And well, speaking of delay, it’s been just under three years since we got the AirPods Max. While we’re at it, I wouldn’t be mad at a new HomePod mini.

A better look at the Vision Pro seems almost certain. Content remains a big question mark, so this could be a year of demos, as the “space computing” headset hits the market early next year. We have practically nothing in the way of games. Now that the Unity SDK and development platform have been out in the world for a minute, it seems like a distinct possibility.
It would make sense to have more details about iOS/macOS/iPadOS/watchOS release dates. Macs, however, seem like a bit more of a long shot this time around, with the M3 much more likely to arrive in 2024.
