The owner of an award-winning shop that specializes in women’s hair loss described how she’s on a mission to fight the taboo after her own “horrific” experience.

Bear with the Hair on Hornchurch High Street competed with two other local businesses in the category to win Best Customer Service at the Havering Small Business Awards, garnering the most votes from the local population.

The business began when owner Kellie Green, who grew up in Chadwell Heath, decided to leave her life as a writer behind to set up shop after losing her own hair over 20 years ago.

Remembering her trip, Kellie said Recorder that she was “driven by a passion to help other ladies” who had been through the same thing as her.

She said: “There really aren’t many places you go as a woman if you’ve lost your hair. You can go online and buy a wig, but I found it next to impossible to find a place that really understood what I was going through.”

Her first experience in a wig shop was “horrible”, she added: “There were a lot of heads with hair on and no real personal service.”

Kellie says Bear With The Hair isn’t just a wig shop. From just covering a small bald patch to covering a full head, it offers hair integration and extensions, among other services.

Recently, he has also designed a system that allows women with total hair loss right at the front to lead a normal life. Kellie stated that, to her knowledge and research, no one had provided such a solution to this problem.

She said she is now at a point where she is about to launch her own range of hairpieces that she has designed herself.

Insisting that business is run from her heart, not her pocket, Kellie is on a mission to change the taboo around hair loss for women.

She said: “Women can be very embarrassed and nervous about it. I’m trying to give them a warm welcome.”

The industry can be very expensive for many women, Kellie noted, and her goal is to make it more accessible to those who need help.

He added: “I give them a free first consultation. They can talk about their problems and hair loss and the reasons behind it. I become a counselor and really get to know my clients.”
