Bedminster Asda car park is now a potential development site

The car park at Asda’s Bedminster store has been earmarked for potential housing development, according to a new map showing present and future development sites in and around Bristol city centre. The map, which was produced by a Bristol estate agency, currently hangs on the wall of the mayor’s office in City Hall and shows the large area of ​​the car park between the store and Coronation Road as a site for future residential development.

bristol live It is understood that estate agent Avison Young consulted with Bristol City Council to produce the map, titled Bristol Development Map 2023, which has been distributed to the construction and property industry within the city in recent weeks.

The map includes dozens of development sites, from relatively small ones, such as long-standing plans for new offices where the abandoned Grosvenor Hotel now stands, to major projects for thousands of homes in places like temple quarter, white house street and Bedminster Green.

Each of the sites is marked as being developed, has planning permission, or has potential for future development. Nearly every site on the map has been the subject of reports of bristol live as part of our ongoing coverage of the housing crisis and the huge plans for tens of thousands of new homes in and around downtown.

But there are several that have yet to be the subject of any announcements or releases of future plans or inquiries. Among them is the designation of the car park at Bedminster Asda for future development. The car park occupies an area of ​​about four hectares and currently includes a self-service gas station. With important developments in white house street, mead street, Bedminster Green and the Factory No1 complex in Bedminster, the site would be a prime development location, fronting the banks of the River Avon via Coronation Road.

bristol live understands that the parking lot was included as part of a strategic planning project by the council that is considering all parking lots in and around the city center as potential sites for development. Any project in the Asda car park could be a larger scale development but similar to the beginning of a Existing plan to build flats on top of the Portwall car park opposite St Mary Redcliffe Church in Redcliffe, a plan that would retain the existing car park and new houses would be built on piers or stilts above the car park.

A similar development already exists across Bedminster Parade in the Squires Court development at Bedminster Bridge roundabout, which has hundreds of apartments built on top of a ground level car park.

Avison Young refused to share a detailed electronic version of the map with Bristol Live, and there was no word from Asda whether it had been in discussion with developers about the future of its car park and service station; Bristol Live asked Asda. on the map and is waiting for an answer.

Other sites marked on Avison Young’s map include the redevelopment of part of Broadmead, closest to Cabot Circus, something that has been talked about for years but has yet to happen: the demolition of The Galleries shopping center and car park and creation of a new neighborhood in the center of the city, the eventual redevelopment of the Lloyds Amphitheater buildingsand the potential to build residential houses along the south bank of the River Avon on Bath Road in Totterdown, on the town side of Totterdown Bridge, opposite the new Boat Yard block of flats.
