This week’s episode of Formula 1 beyond the net On the podcast, former American F1 driver Scott Speed joins host Tom Clarkson to discuss his motorsport career, his time in the sport, his advice for the new generation of drivers and much more.
Speed explains how his love of motorsport stemmed from his father’s contagious passion for racing, watching him win titles in go-karts, and how that fueled his dream of wanting to be in Formula 1, before finally revealing what he thought he was naturally gifted growing up.
He also explains how he ended up joining Red Bull, the “absurd” nature of the contract, his relationship with Helmut Marko, how the team was ahead of its time, and how he owes his entire racing career to Milton Keynes. -team based.
The former Toro Rosso driver also speaks candidly about struggling to adjust to life in Europe, his lack of motivation to keep improving in Formula 1, as well as his “super cocky and arrogant” attitude. He also explains how he received a wake-up call upon returning to the race in the United States.

Lastly, Speed recalls his last Formula 1 race at the Nurburgring and how he found the limit of Franz Tost’s patience in their final post-race discussion. The American also remembers how he felt when he was told that the “golden boy” Sebastian Vettel would replace him, and the conversation with Dietrich Mateschitz that decided his future.
