The mammalian dive reflex is real. However, although the vagus nerve is obviously a real nerve, there is a lot of pseudoscience about it out there right now. (The Mayo clinic, the Cleveland clinic, Johns Hopkins, and the UKâs national health service all are examples of useful fact-checking resources.) â€
oh my god yes. iâm autistic and i have an anxiety disorder. when i get overwhelmed or overstimulated, my number one helpers is to GET. COLD. whether that be going outside if itâs colder, literally sticking my hand in the snow, standing in front of the fridge, rubbing an ice cube on my chest or really anywhere itâs quite calming or, when i have no options, just running my hands and wrists under cool sink water. it helps me ground myself and makes my senses and nervous system chill out.
"When nothing you would usually do seems to be working, it might just be time to try something new" – Tori, you need to make a book with all your quotes and affimations in â€ïž I would happily buy that. I'd be happy and also have insane realisations whilst reading it đ insert glass breaking noise from HIMYM đ (iykyk đ)
You should look into DPT. Itâs especially useful for those with extreme anxiety/paranoia. It works by putting pressure on your legs so that you are forced to take deep and full breaths. Many service dogs are trained in this task because of how easy and effective it can be. You can recreate it with any willing cuddle buddy or weighted stuffed animal.
As child who has had panic disorder/episodes since i was 4 (from abuse and neglect), having a mom like you would have been a God-send. Your children are blessed to have you â€
Yes! As a member of the Nippy Dippers Club and cold at the end of my showers, yes! My therapist brought it up. I did a little research into how (beside cupping handfuls and putting it on my face), I had a friend doing river dips too. My niece gets hot in the lead up to panic attacks. So, as a "thinking of you" gift, I bought her disposable ice packs. That way, she can carry them in her bag or pocket and use them anywhere!
When my brother and I were kids if one of us started crying we would grab a cup to measure how many tears we could catch from the other person. It always helped us stop crying and start laughing.
Off topic, but I wish I could do makeup like you! My favorite color is, ALL the colors of the ocean, but I wear neutral shades. I would try to step it up if I could do that!
Feeling angry in response to feeling better is a very normal and real thing. It can feel unsafe to feel better, because we feel afraid that the âgood feelingâ will go away again. I appreciate that you giggled through it because ultimately⊠it is safe to feel better. We have to train our nervous systems to trust this, and laughing at the grief/confusion can help us get there
Being mad at feeling better can mean that the feelings that caused the reaction weren't taken seriously. It's treating the symptoms without getting to the cause or at least that's what it can feel like.
This made me think of a time I was having a meltdown down and my Mom couldn't figure out how to help me so she just handed me a chicken. đ Not the exact same principal, but it DID work. Lol I think the surprise jarred me back into stasis.
So THIS is why drinking ice cold water helps me…. because i can feel it go down my throat & into my stomach… through the centre of my chest. Huh. Well who wudda thunk it. Love it.

Getting mad about it working is honestly such a mood đđ
Sat down with my screaming toddler in the store and the shock made her laugh and the rage disappeared
