Bluesky’s active user base is shrinking as its focus expands beyond the app.

The decentralized social network Bluesky was one of the biggest beneficiaries of the Exodus from Elon Musk’s X in November 2024, after the US elections. But now, almost two years later, the social network and potential competitor to X is struggling to maintain its momentum.

According to data from the digital intelligence provider SimilarwebBluesky’s mobile app had 10.4 million monthly active users worldwide as of June 2026, down 27.2% year over year. Additionally, daily active mobile users continued to decline, falling 25.6% year over year in July to around 3 million.

These decreases indicate that, although the Bluesky app continues to add registered accounts, fewer people are using its mobile app on a regular basis. It also suggests that some of those who joined Bluesky due to their dissatisfaction with X after the election have not stayed long term.

But the most important takeaway here is not just that Bluesky’s post-election momentum has slowed. Bluesky’s app has lost more than half of its monthly active users since its late-2024 peak, meaning usage of its app continued to decline even after the initial post-election surge subsided. (Its quarterly average was about 22.1 million monthly active users in the fourth quarter of 2024, data from Similarweb indicates, and decreased to 10.7 million in the second quarter of 2026. That’s a decrease of about 52%.)

Building beyond Bluesky

While Bluesky’s numbers are down, those who stayed are committed. Its smaller community remains relatively active, with a stickiness rate (the proportion of daily and monthly active users) of about 29% as of June, about the same as Threads.

For The new CEO of Bluesky, Toni Schneider, These numbers may not be all that worrying. The company is not entirely focused on making Bluesky (the app) successful, but rather on making it possible for the underlying protocol (AT Proto) to power a growing number of applications, services and social communities. This is something that is happening now, as projects like BlackSky and Eurosky are growing, while some AT Proto applications like the Skylight focused on video They’ve also found early traction.

In addition, the company has launched new products, such as Attie, AI-powered research tooland is now working to add support for private data to Bluesky. The latter could generate new interest in Bluesky from a different type of user: those less interested in the public realm and more interested in private networks and communities.

What’s more, Similarweb’s data doesn’t necessarily suggest that Bluesky users have returned to X, as some might have feared.

Instead, the data shows that X monthly active users on mobile worldwide declined about 3% year over year in June, and X daily active users on mobile fell 7% in July to 123.7 million. (Of course,

In any case, the application we should worry about now is Threads. It’s unclear whether Threads is benefiting from Bluesky’s drop in engagement or whether it managed to attract a new group of people who had never used a Twitter-like service before.

In any case, daily active users of the Meta-owned app increased 21.3% year over year to 147 million in July 2026, and visits to its website increased 112% year over year to 471.6 million.

sky blue own public statistics indicate The company now has almost 46 million registered users, but does not share Specific data on daily or monthly active usage.
