BMW Films is back with a short film titled “The Calm” now available on YouTube.
The film stars “Guardians of the Galaxy” actress Pom Klementieff and a BMW i7 M70 xDrive, the top-of-the-range all-electric high-performance sedan lineup of the flagship BMW 7 Series. Klementieff plays a secret agent summoned to a meeting in Cannes, who has to fight off an assassination attempt on the way, eventually meeting another agent played by Uma Thurman.
BMW took this opportunity to show some of the i7 technology, including gesture controls and the 31.3-inch display that folds down from the headliner. The first sightings of “The Calm” occurred in the rear of i7 sedans, according to BMW. The automaker brought several of the cars to the Cannes Film Festival in France for the premiere.
The filmmakers have also allowed themselves some artistic license when it comes to driver-assist technology. At one point, Klementieff’s secret agent and his would-be assassin fight while the car is in “self-driving” mode, moving autonomously without the need for supervision. Currently, such technology is not available in production cars.
Expected to launch in the US as a 2024 model, the i70 M70 is the most powerful series 7 model available—gasoline or electric. Its four-wheel-drive, dual-motor powertrain makes 650 hp, allowing it to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds according to BMW estimates, en route to a governed top speed of 155 mph. BMW M engineers also raised the level of sportiness in the chassis with an M-specific air suspension with adjustable damping and self-levelling, as well as stiffer bodywork and active anti-roll bars.
BMW Films was launched in 2001, using top talent to showcase the automaker’s vehicles in short films. The initial batch of eight was called “The Hire” and starred Clive Owen as an unnamed driver in the vein of the “Transporter” films. An additional film called “The Escape”, also starring Owenit was released in 2016.
