The North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) awarded the College of The Albemarle (COA) Small Business Center (SBC) the 2024 Award of Excellence for its outstanding leadership and impact within the Small Business Center Network (SBCN) of the state. This recognition specifically highlights the center’s role in supporting a local business to overcome the challenges of creating a grocery market within a small rural community, providing a much-needed resource for residents, a COA news release noted.
Tammy and Billy Newell turned to the COA Small Business Center for guidance and support as they redeveloped a former grocery store into a thriving Little Riddle Market in South Mills. “Their journey from a small vegetable stand to a bustling market highlights the power of partnership and the Small Business Center’s role in the community,” the statement states.
Holly Staples, director of the COA Small Business Center, reflected on the recognition and said, “It is truly an honor to be recognized for the work we do every day. Supporting small business owners like Tammy and Billy Newell, whose Little Riddle Market has transformed their community, is at the heart of what we do. “His passion and perseverance are a source of inspiration and I am very proud to have played a role in his success.”
Robin Zinsmeister, dean of workforce development, public services and career preparation at COA, shared: “This award reflects the hard work and dedication of the Small Business Center team and the entrepreneurs we serve. “It is rewarding to see businesses thrive and make significant impacts in their communities.”
Dr. Jack Bagwell, President of COA, added: “The Center for Small Business supports COA’s mission to transform lives and communities. By equipping small business owners with the tools and resources they need, Holly and her team are deeply impacting local entrepreneurial efforts. “This recognition is well deserved and we are incredibly proud of their achievements.”
