With the Chelsea Flower Show next week and the spring weather finally upon us, many of our thoughts are turning to gardening.
But the residents in the Vanbrugh Park Estate in Greenwich they are not sprucing and pruning.
Instead, they are locked in a desperate battle to keep the ‘front gardens‘ which they have created in the tarmac outside their apartments after the council demanded its removal, citing fire safety concerns.
Resident Phin Harper, who started an online petition to save these modest but important spaces, hopes a council meeting this week will prevent his planters, garden gnomes and benches from being dismantled after a year under threat.
Since the pandemic we have all been aware of the importance of nature for our well-being.
Properties with gardens have premium prices; Knight Frank recently found that London flats with gardens were worth 12 per cent more than those without.
Thousands of people have moved into homes with private outdoor space in the last three years, often increasing their housing budgets to do so.
But a garden shouldn’t be a luxury available only to those who have the money or the mobility to get around. It doesn’t need to be here, either: the spaces have been used for pots since the estate, designed by Barbican architects Chamberlin Powell and Bon, was built in the 1960s.
It’s also important to have a sense of agency about where you live – witness the rampant Nimbyism blocking house construction and shuttering pubs across London.
I’m not a fan of the legal card brigade, but equally, I don’t think private property owners should be the only people able to exert influence over their homes and neighborhoods.
The concerns of council tenants and tenants are too often pushed aside. With 3,300 signatures at your request and counting, the residents of Vanbrugh Park refuse to be ignored. I hope they find a solution.
