Last night I had Charlie Chaplin in my kitchen. And Hemingway and Shirley Temple. Or, at least, I did it in liquid form. The three VIP had cocktails created for them in the heyday of their fame and, although they may have gone, they live in their art, and in Gin, Grenadina and Ron.

The golden age for the cocktail of list A was between the first and Second World War, an era in which cocktails were created to celebrate everything from opening nights and state occasions to the most popular film stars. In 1920, Charlie Chaplin was honored with a cocktail in New York Hotel Waldorf-Actoria. There is no evidence that the actor has taken that fairly sick mixture of Albricoque brandy, Lima gin and lime juice. But still, the drink endures. When the Shirley Temple children’s star was forced to settle for Soda Pop at the Hollywood parties, she did not have fun. But why be happy with a cocktail when you can give your name to a complete bar? The Ritz in Paris was a favorite Hemingway den: He spent many nights drinking Martinis and Coñac with a Louche gang that included F Scott Fitzgerald. The celebrity drink brands are ten and cents these days, but the tribute cocktail has died. Where are the swift sors, the Timothée Martinis and the Daiquiris Eilish?
