Derby Cathedral Quarter BID celebrates Small Business Saturday with news of exciting openings and milestone anniversaries

Updated figures from the Cathedral Quarter BID reveal that 28 new small businesses have opened in Derby’s Cathedral Quarter since the start of the year, and six more small businesses have joined since the figures were last published in August.

The area now has more than 300 small businesses, reflecting its vibrant and thriving business community. These updated statistics are released ahead of Small Business Saturday on December 7, highlighting the quarter’s continued growth and appeal.

Small Business Saturday celebrates the achievements of start-ups, small business owners and new independent shops across the UK and encourages people to shop locally.

Martin Langsdale, chairman of the Cathedral Quarter BID, said he was excited about the area’s continued success.

He explained:

“The growth we have seen this year is a testament to the Cathedral Quarter’s enduring appeal as a place to start and grow a business. “Small Business Saturday is the perfect occasion to celebrate the incredible contribution these businesses make to our community.”

This year’s event coincides with a major milestone for The Mecca, a family-owned independent jewelry and watch store celebrating its centenary of Christmas operations in the Cathedral Quarter. This anniversary reflects the unique combination of history and innovation that defines the area.

Among the startups that have chosen the Cathedral Quarter this year are Social Moody, a thriving social media agency; Glamberry, coffee shop and custom bakery; Rapture Tattoo, a premium tattoo studio; and Bridge the Gap CIC, a social enterprise promoting emotional literacy and mental health support for children and families.

To add to the holiday excitement, Thrive Mind Village, a new community center in Iron Gate, will hold its official launch on Saturday for small businesses, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thrive Mind Village will feature a store filled with books, crafts, gifts and more , along with culinary delights from emerging chef Sky, who will offer vegan delights such as stir-fries, steamed buns, Aloo cakes and festive pancakes. Visitors can also join the ‘Free Craft Along’ session hosted by Rachel, bringing their own projects or creating something new to take home.

Simon Jones and Liz Le Drew from Thrive Mind Village emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses, saying:

“Small Business Saturday is hugely important, especially at a time of year when big online retailers like Amazon do the most harm to people and the planet for profit.

“It’s Derby’s small businesses, run by passionate local people, that go the extra mile to make things with real quality and care, providing unique experiences and ethical products that help people and the planet rather than harm them.”

To mark the day, The Cathedral Quarter BID has worked with Derby City Council to offer free parking to shoppers in the Darwin Place car park on Saturday. There are 231 places available during the day.
