Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for months scrupulously avoided mentioning Donald Trump’s name at all, instead making veiled references to the Republican Party’s “culture of losing.”
The veil is gone.
In the days following his announcement that he was challenging Trump for the Republican presidential nomination, DeSantis accused him of “leaning to the left.”
He contrasts with the former president on a range of issues including abortion, immigration and the economy.
And — in a move DeSantis called the ultimate betrayal of conservative values — he says Trump, in the governor’s feud with the giant corporation and cultural touchstone that’s also one of the state’s largest taxpayers and employers, “focused on the… site provided by Disney”.
“I don’t know what happened to Donald Trump,” he told WWTN radio in Nashville. “This is a different guy now than when he ran in 2015 and 2016. And I think the direction he’s going with his campaign is wrong.”
It was one of more than a dozen interviews with friendly media since the presidential nomination papers were filed on Wednesday. The first, with Twitter Inc. owner Elon Musk was overshadowed by technical glitches that marred DeSantis’ long-awaited entry into the race.
But his newfound willingness to take on Trump head-on is sharpening the contours of the Republican nomination battle. With DeSantis largely keeping his mouth shut, his challenge to Trump was largely a debate about personalities and temperament.
Now that DeSantis is officially in the running, 33 points behind Trump, the governor is taking a tougher stance on policy issues.
Speaking of spending, DeSantis said Trump is partly responsible for the country’s $31 trillion in debt. “He added nearly $8 trillion in debt in just four years as president,” he said. “I was right on those issues, but he wasn’t.”
On the subject of abortion, DeSantis defended Florida’s newly enacted six-week abortion ban against Trump’s criticism that it was “too harsh” and that DeSantis didn’t know what he was doing.
“He runs to the left,” DeSantis said. But he also stayed away from supporting the national abortion ban favored by other Republican candidates. “I think at the end of the day, with a bottom-up approach, we’re going to save more lives,” he told conservative talk radio host Dana Loesch.
On immigration, DeSantis accused Trump of supporting an amnesty for undocumented immigrants as part of a 2018 immigration bill. “Beating me for taking the America First position feels pretty weird to me,” DeSantis said.
The Trump campaign responded that as a congressman, DeSantis voted for a bill giving legal status to some undocumented minors as part of a package of tougher immigration restrictions, before opposing a similar plan.
On the subject of crime, DeSantis slammed the First Step Act, Trump’s signature criminal justice bill, telling conservative podcaster Ben Shapiro Friday it was “basically a jailbreak bill.” DeSantis voted in favor of an early version of the bill, but resigned from Congress before the final bill passed the House of Representatives.
And DeSantis was repeatedly stunned by Trump’s criticism of his handling of the Walt Disney Co. DeSantis has petitioned to have the company stripped of its self-governing status because Disney objected to a law banning teaching about race and sexual identity. Disney this month canceled plans to relocate 2,000 employees to the state.
“What a mess this is,” Trump said on Thursday. “He could have found an easy fix, but no – he wanted to show the Fake News what a tough guy he is. He is not.”
DeSantis clapped back.
“He relies on the culture. He even sided with Disney against me,” the Florida governor told WWTN. “He sides with Disney and says it was wrong for me to join them. You know, people have to make their choices about which path to take.”
But at other times, DeSantis stuck closely to the Trump line. Asked about Trump’s insistence in a CNN interview that he could solve Russia’s war on Ukraine “in one day and 24 hours,” DeSantis backed the former president.
“I don’t know if he can do it in 24 hours. I mean, he’s prone to rhetorical flourishes,” he told Newsmax. “But I think his instinct to try to find a solution instead of letting things escalate into a war of attrition – or God forbid escalating since Russia has the largest nuclear arsenal in the world – I think is the right instinct. “
