It is quite common for a castle to come with a house on the land, originally for a gardener or caretaker to live. But what about a house with a castle in the back garden?
A simple three-bedroom terraced house in East London has come on the market with it. Although, the word castle may be exaggerating a bit since the stone feature is barely big enough to stand on.
The unusual garden feature was built by a previous owner sometime in the 20he century and remains impressively detailed if somewhat cracked.
It has attracted a great deal of interest from house hunters and the Property of Abbey Wood has been viewed more than 1,500 times a day by amazed property seekers.
Estate agent John Payne is selling the recently renovated house on McLeod Road for £550,000 and said the castle had added to its appeal.
“When we visit, most people say it’s a great feature,” said Will Chidley, branch manager. “Though they do mention that they can do some work before letting their kids play on it!”
Chidley said the current owners inherited the unusual outbuilding when they bought the house 25 years ago.
“His kids used it initially, but now it’s just a feature. It’s about a story high, you have to crouch a bit in places, but you can stand on it.”
As well as a dream playhouse for aspiring knights and princesses, the stone fortress, which is approximately 5.5m wide, could be used as an imposing shed or an atmospheric summer house.
The Victorian three bed terrace at the far end of the 14m long garden has been recently decorated and appears empty and unfurnished in agent pictures.
It has two reception rooms on the ground floor and a galley kitchen below the bedrooms and separate bathroom and toilet.

“With transport links like Crossrail, we are finding more and more people commuting from central London,” he said.
“Sales prices are lower than in Greenwich, for example, so buyers can afford the highest mortgage rates on the market.”
Median sales prices for properties on McLeod Road rose by almost a third last year to £490,000, according to Rightmove.
