San Francisco puts on a grand show in June with a range of events, from Juneteenth to Pride. The month offers a plethora of opportunities to shop, dine, and support small businesses. This article outlines some of the highlights and announcements from the city during this time.
Small Business Permit Enhancement Legislation
The Office of Economic and Workforce Development, in collaboration with Mayor London Breed and Supervisors Dorsey, Engardio, and Melgar, has introduced a new legislation to make it easier for small businesses to obtain permits in San Francisco. The legislation will foster economic growth and recovery, as well as fill business vacancies. By easing restrictions and allowing more commercial uses on the ground floor, the legislation aims to help businesses achieve their goals.
For Sale: Ocean Beach Cafe
Located at 734 La Playa St, the Ocean Beach Café is a turnkey cafe that covers an area of 1,000 square feet with a 40-foot parklet and sidewalk seating. While the cafeteria currently operates as a beverage and non-alcoholic beverage store, it is close to the beach and serves as the landmark for breakfast and lunch with potential for dinner time. The current owner is willing to offer direct support for tips and tricks of the business and the area for two weeks after the transfer of ownership.
COVID-19 Paid Sick Leave Supplemental Grant Applications Open
As part of economic relief, the California COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave Grant will award funds to eligible small businesses and non-profit organizations that had 26-49 employees between January 1, 2021, and December 31, 2022, and have incurred COVID-19 supplemental paid sick leave costs.
Report Commercial Vacancies
The city has made it easier for the public to report commercial vacancies. By filling a form on sf.gov, you can report a business’ opening or deterioration in a vacant commercial building through 311. Reporting such issues helps to facilitate economic growth and recovery in San Francisco.
The Civic Joy Fund
The Civic Joy Fund assists in the city’s economic recovery and partners with community leaders, artists, musicians, small businesses, and volunteers to bring more art, music, color, energy, and excitement to the city streets.

San Francisco offers a range of webinars and events, including Buying Your Business: How are You Going to Pay For It?, which covers various sources of financing and working capital. The Digital Marketing Office Hours provide a 90-minute Q&A session with a marketing professional, Christina Hunt, and helps businesses develop their online marketing strategies. The Succession and Business Planning webinar helps small business owners think through their exit plan, while a Small Business Networking Event helps connect people in your community and hear from a panel of consultants.

At the event hosted by SF Planning, You’ll learn about existing zoning and land use rules and what changes could be made to better meet San Francisco’s housing needs, increase affordability for low- and moderate-income households, and help to promote racial and social equity. New Housing impacts commercial corridors and the small business economy.
Going up Make Music Day
Celebrate music by inviting music into your business, and sign up to Make Music SF matchmaking site. Remember: to conduct entertainment at your business establishment, you must have a permit from the SF Entertainment Commission.

Small Business Permit Enhancement Legislation
Our office collaborated with Mayor London Breed and Supervisors Dorsey, Engardio and Melgar to introduce legislation to make it easier for small businesses to obtain permits, foster economic growth and recovery, and fill business vacancies in San Francisco. Through more than 100 changes to the Planning Code, the legislation will serve to ease restrictions such as: allowing more commercial uses on the ground floor to help fill commercial vacancies; lifting of restrictions on bars and restaurants in certain neighborhoods; facilitate the legalization process of existing outdoor patios; remove certain public notification requirements; and allow priority permit processing for nightlife entertainment, bars, and restaurants. We will continue to share updates as the legislation progresses.

COVID-19 Paid Sick Leave Supplemental Grant
Applications opened on June 1.
The California COVID-19 Supplemental Paid Sick Leave Grant will award funds to eligible small businesses and non-profit organizations that had 26-49 employees between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2022 and have incurred COVID-19 supplemental paid sick leave costs.
Commercial Reuse Program for Restaurants
This grant program administered by SF Environment supports restaurants in transitioning from single-use disposable items to reusable food service items, including cups, plates and utensils. Restaurants can receive free technical support and a $500 incentive to help purchase reusable dinnerware and utensils to replace single-use disposable items.

Coming soon is the US premiere of Fleurs de Villes PRIDE, a fresh floral celebration of joy and inclusion at The San Francisco Mint, created by local florists. An informal “unhosted” gathering of heritage professionals, young conservationists, hobbyists, friends, and Legacy Business cohorts interested in safeguarding San Francisco’s unique architectural and cultural identity.
Established in 1977, Moby Dick is one of the oldest gay bars in the Castro and an integral part of the history of the LGBTQ+ community. Moby Dick is a place to meet old friends and meet new ones. This is a special Heritage Happy Hour in celebration of Pride Month.
