If you’re looking for a vacation home that combines coastal living with an enchanting history, look no further than Humberston Fitties. Located on the east coast of England, Humberston Fitties is a secluded holiday park that was once home to the RAF Goxhill, a base used by WWII pilots for training exercises. After the war, the cabins at RAF Goxhill were dismantled and sold off as surplus military equipment, and a local resident, Frank Cripsey, saw the increased interest in vacation homes as an opportunity to purchase the cabins, and thus began a new era in Humberston Fitties.

Your Own Corner of Paradise

Once you set foot in Humberston Fitties, you will immediately understand why people choose to vacation here year after year. For starters, the park is situated on a plot of land just a five-minute walk from the sea. The bungalows feature many of the original 1940s fixtures and fittings and retain much of their original character. Some visitors even believe that the cabins might have hosted Hollywood film star Clark Gable, who was reportedly stationed in Goxhill during the war.

Additionally, several of the bungalows are of significant historical and architectural interest and have been designated to have protection in the conservation area. This means they are subject to specific criteria that will guide any repairs, renovations, or updates you might want to make on your property. Purchasing an Humberston Fitties bungalow is not just buying a vacation home, it is buying a piece of history.

A historic Humberston Fitties holiday home believed to have ties to a Hollywood heartthrob has been reluctantly put on the market by its owners.

The property has been in the family of Steve and Peggy Elliott for over 60 years and has been a much-loved base for getaways for decades, but now the bungalow is “outgrowing” the couple and they are being sold.

The larger than average holiday bungalow is made up of two former RAF Goxhill cabins, which were bought from the base after it closed and moved to Humberston. Peggy’s father, Charlie Topple, a fish dock worker, later bought the cabins, which had been arranged to create an L-shaped bungalow, for his retirement.

Steve said: “Legend has it that Clark Gable stayed in one of the cabins. He was a pilot in the war and was at Goxhill.

“The story that came through from Frank Cripsey, who brought a whole group of buildings from Goxhill, was that Clark Gable stayed in one of the cabins. No one can prove whether or not it was the case, it’s a story, but it’s entirely possible.”

Steve said: “The family have owned the bungalow on Main Road, Fitties, for over 60 years, but we are finally selling it. Now I’m 78 and my wife is 75, and she’s getting too much for us.
