A historic Humberston Fitties holiday home believed to have ties to a Hollywood heartthrob has been reluctantly put on the market by its owners.
The property has been in the family of Steve and Peggy Elliott for over 60 years and has been a much-loved base for getaways for decades, but now the bungalow is “outgrowing” the couple and they are being sold.
The larger than average holiday bungalow is made up of two former RAF Goxhill cabins, which were bought from the base after it closed and moved to Humberston. Peggy’s father, Charlie Topple, a fish dock worker, later bought the cabins, which had been arranged to create an L-shaped bungalow, for his retirement.

Steve said: “Legend has it that Clark Gable stayed in one of the cabins. He was a pilot in the war and was at Goxhill.
“The story that came through from Frank Cripsey, who brought a whole group of buildings from Goxhill, was that Clark Gable stayed in one of the cabins. No one can prove whether or not it was the case, it’s a story, but it’s entirely possible.”
Steve said: “The family have owned the bungalow on Main Road, Fitties, for over 60 years, but we are finally selling it. Now I’m 78 and my wife is 75, and she’s getting too much for us.
“It’s like having a second home. We hope it goes to someone who appreciates it as much as we have. It has been a place for the whole family to go and we have sometimes rented it out to friends.
“It’s beautiful down there, we are on a double plot that is only five minutes from the sea. We’ve had family barbecues and holidays and all sorts there, but someone’s got to mow the grass and keep the yard in good shape.”
The bungalow is distinctive in that the Elliotts have retained many of the original features of the RAF cabins. The property has been of interest to the North East Lincolnshire Council department of heritage and conservation and photographs have been taken as a record of its past, as part of a 1950s history that is being compiled.
Steve said: “Frank Cripsey, who was from Cleethorpes, used to camp on the sand dunes that are now the Fitties. He must have used a truck to move the buildings he bought: the cabins are quite large but come packed with hinges at the corners, like a 90-year-old Ikea system.
“When my father-in-law retired, he had cancer and he wasn’t going abroad or anything, so he spent a lot of time in the bungalow. He built an extension.
“I realized how important the cabins are historically and inside it looks very much like it would have been when they were in Goxhill.” Steve said: “We have a picture of the Cripsey family outside the bungalow and there are two little girls in the picture.
“A couple of years ago a car pulled up outside with two elderly ladies inside who asked, ‘Was this originally Frank Cripsey’s bungalow? We used to stay here, he was our uncle.'”
“I took them home and they remembered everything. I gave them the original nameplate, Berryhead, that the bungalow had had.”
Peggy said: “The bungalow is getting the better of us; we are getting old and you have to be aware of these things. We also have our own house in Grimsby, with a front and back garden, and everything needs tending.
The bungalow is on the market with Bettles, Miles & Holland. It has an asking price of £100,000 or the nearest offer.
