MotoGP™ fans were treated to an exciting weekend of racing at the 2023 Italian GP, held at the Mugello circuit. From pre-race press conferences to post-race interviews, there were plenty of notable talking points from the four-day event.

Repsol Honda Team star, Marc Márquez, addressed rumors about his potential move to Ducati, saying that while he is committed to Honda, he will always look for a winning project. Meanwhile, South African rider, Brad Binder, set a new all-time speed record at Mugello and expressed confidence in his bike’s abilities.

Catch up on some of the most notable talking points from the 2023 Italian GP

Another great weekend of MotoGP™ action is over and gone and it’s safe to say that the Italian GP was full of talking points. Here are a few that we have selected from the four days in the magnificent Mugello.

In Thursday’s pre-event press conference, here’s what the Repsol Honda team star had to say about his potential future after former teammate Jorge Lorenzo suggested the #93 could end up at Ducati.

“I have a contract next year with Honda and I am totally committed to them because it will always be my Plan A. But it is true that I will always look for a winning project, no matter the colors, the names, where… I know that the years go by and it is something that every pilot already knows. I had surgery for the first time on my arm to try to get back to my full physical condition, now I am, so I’m ready to fight for a Championship. we’ll see. My Plan A will always be Honda.”

Brad Binder: “My bike is fast!”

The South African set a new all-time speed record at Mugello on Saturday, this is what he told the media about it that same evening.

“My bike is fast! I can pass people at the end of the straight. That’s something I can keep in my pocket, which is fantastic. the motorbike is fine [but] there are some small things that I want to improve for tomorrow. I think today we were going for a good result. I saw that in the last lap I had the same time as those in front. If I can somehow stay out of trouble tomorrow, then I think I can do a good job.”

Marc Márquez: “We are colliding too much”

After Joan Mir (Repsol Honda Team) and Alex Rins (LCR Honda Castrol) missed Sunday’s GP due to injuries, Marc Márquez fell out of the race while fighting for the podium. The eight-time world champion admits that Honda riders crash too much, but that’s because they all have a winning mentality.

“At this circuit I was trying to control myself a lot because I know that a high-speed crash normally injures you like Mir and Rins. But we are crashing too much.

“Honda has drivers with a winning mentality and if you put drivers with a winning mentality and you don’t have the opportunity to be there, the problem is that you crash more and more because we are pushing more than the others to be on the lap times. And this is what happened.”

Morbidelli’s future has been a hot topic all season. Mugello watched the Italian beat his Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™ teammate Fabio Quartararo, which, from the outside, looks like a result that will help his cause stay at Yamaha in 2024. Here’s how Morbidelli reacted (link above).

Luca Marini: “I tried everything”

Despite racing injured, the Italian Mooney VR46 Racing Team were on the hunt for a dream podium finish at Mugello during Sunday’s race. In the end, he narrowly missed out to a hard-charging Johann Zarco (Prima Pramac Racing).

“I did not expect this kind of result. I started very well and starting from the front row helps you a lot to manage the race. It’s a much easier race. I tried to give it my all. I make a mistake trying to overtake Jack in the Casanova-Savelli because then Martin overtook me and we lose a lot of time with Jack. Because if he could stay in Martin’s slipstream for more than half the race, I sure could handle my body a little more. Because at the end, the last four or five laps, I didn’t have enough strength to keep the grip tight, especially when the bike shakes under the braking of Turn 1 and the exit from Biondetti 2, and also under full throttle, it was very very difficult.

“Behind Johann, I tried everything because I really wanted this podium, because it’s a dream to jump on the point here in Mugello, because it’s the best place in the world to get a podium. But we will try to repeat and achieve this goal next year.”

Jack Miller: “I even raised my hand to celebrate”

Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and rocket starts are becoming the norm in MotoGP™ in 2023. And at Mugello, it was the same. Sunday’s pitch was so good that Miller admitted he even threw a handball in celebration.

“I made a fantastic start, an incredible jump, I almost passed Pecco before he started to move. I even threw my hand up in the air to celebrate the start. I don’t know if you guys got it.” (We certainly did, Jack.)
