One of Paul Bellezza’s first tasks after joining the Riot Games video game developer as an intern in 2006 was to comment on what was wrong with his flagship title, League of Legends.
After he and other interns informed the company that he did not meet his “basic expectations as players”, they were asked to help make him something they really wanted to play. League of Legends It made me one of the most played games in the world.
That Riot Games openly proves the work of the “founding interns” in the subsequent success of the game shows that these more junior employees can offer more to a company than making tea cups.
But making a real contribution can be tense. Not many interns get their ideas and are heard. And when they do, they do not always receive credit. The way in which people at the beginning of their career are properly recognized and rewarded depends on employers, and can also reflect on them.
Take the case of Spotify wrapped, the Annual Personalized Summary of the Music Platform from the favorite users of users. In 2020, Jewel Ham said on a tweet that he had invented aspects of the function during a 2019 internship on Spotify. Although he did not claim credit for the concept, he shared screenshots suggesting that he “restructured” with interactive characteristics, statistics and hashtags.
The subsequent fury of social networks demonstrated the repercussions of the staff feeling incorrectly accredited. Spotify said that involved was introduced in 2015, and added that the company executes a “very successful” interns program, including opportunities “to work on important projects, receive experience and gain experience.” Ham, now a successful visual artist, declined to comment. Edward Arnold, employment lawyer of CMS, says that the staff has little resource when their intellectual property is adopted. “If you are doing this on behalf of your employer, the IP will be granted in them and that will not change,” he adds. “If you think about ideas in your employmentThen the employer will expect to possess [them] And you are at the mercy of your employer as to how they reward you. ”

The most informal recognition can also go a long way. The value of the interns continues the participation in the development of their ideas; The delivery of control to more experienced colleagues can create disconnection and, ultimately, lose personal talent employers.
A Junior employee of a large communications agency, who asked to remain in anonymity, said he was “shocked” when he launched a winning concept for a charity campaign backed by celebrities, only for the project to be delivered to a senior colleague. Finally he left the organization for another job.
Others have been more successful. As a young apprentice in the law firm Cleary Gottlieb in 2015, Eloise Skinner, now 32, wrote the Junior Lawyers ManualA professional guide for new lawyers. Later it was published by the Organization of the Industry for Lawyers.
“I was very lucky to have a supervisor who was very encouraging and told me to take it seriously,” says Skinner. Then he obtained book offers, then reluctant as a psychotherapist.
Meanwhile, Bellezza is now the executive producer of League of Legends In Riot Games, the same company he joined as an intern almost 20 years ago. “The fact that it took off and became a global phenomenon [is] Just a dream, ”he says.
