Elon Musk’s SpaceX has secured US funding to provide satellite internet to the Ukrainian military, as its founder abandoned his stated doubts about how his company’s terminals would be deployed in a major conflict.
The Department of Defense has agreed to purchase Starlink terminals from Moss but he has not disclosed how much he will buy or how much he is paying for the service.
Moss had complained about earlier SpaceX was making too little money from various contracts in which at least 20,000 terminals were used for a mix of civilian, humanitarian and military purposes.
While the total number of terminals is unknown, hundreds are destroyed every month in fighting and need to be replaced. SpaceX is expected to be paid by Ukraine’s Security Assistance Initiative, which has funded the procurement of weapons and training to modernize the Ukrainian military while fighting against the Russian army.
“Satellite communications form a vital layer in Ukraine’s overall communications network, and the department contracts with Starlink for services of this type,” the Pentagon said in a statement Thursday.
Musk allowed access to SpaceX’s low-orbiting satellites in Ukraine in late February 2022 in response to a public appeal by a Ukrainian minister. But he has since expressed reticence about the cost and complexity of continuous duty.
Since the start of the war, a mix of terminals has flowed into the country, including some donated by SpaceX, purchased by Ukraine’s allies, such as Poland and the United Kingdom, and others funded by backers. People familiar with those contracts said the price depended on various factors, including whether the terminals were intended for civilian or military use.
The units, which connect a small antenna to a 35cm-high terminal, have enabled the Ukrainian military to perform data-intensive drone surveillance and maintain communications along a front line. They also provide internet to civilians in newly liberated parts of the country where telecommunications services may have been destroyed.
But Musk has made it clear to his Twitter followers that he is concerned about the role his terminals have played in the conflict. In October, some frontline soldiers reported “catastrophic” disruptions in connectivity, mainly as they pushed back Russian forces in the south and east of the country, the Financial Times reported.
The Pentagon has not released further information on the contract, which has been under discussion since October. In response to a request from the Ukrainian defense minister for about 8,000 terminals, Musk had asked the Pentagon to provide financial support, CNN reported it at the moment.
