end of the pandemic? WHO ends global health emergency due to Covid-19

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared this Friday (5) the end of the global health emergency caused by Covid-19. The announcement was made during a press conference attended by the company’s key executives at its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

The organization wanted to point out that the emergency phase of the pandemic is over, but Covid-19 is not. “The battle is not over and we still have weaknesses in our system that we need to improve,” said WHO Executive Director Michael Ryan. “It’s going on with a much lower threat level and a much lower number of deaths, but the virus will continue to be transmitted for a very long time.”

In the more than three years of the pandemic, the WHO says More than 6.9 million deaths have already been confirmed due to the new coronavirus and more than 765 million cases have already been confirmed. On the other hand, more than 13.3 billion vaccine doses have already been administered.

The countries with the most confirmed deaths are the United States (1.1 million), Brazil (701,000), India (531,000), Russia (398,000) and Mexico (333,000), but not all nations have reliable figures. China, for example, confirms 120,000 victims of the virus.

The new coronavirus was first detected in China in late 2019 and quickly spread around the world. In March 2020, the WHO declared Covid-19 a global health emergency.
