Engineering Staffing Global Market Assessment 2024

  • Engineering staffing was estimated to be a $42.4 billion market globally in 2023, making it the third largest professional staffing segment behind IT and healthcare. Engineering staffing is a growth sector of the global staffing industry, driven by investment in infrastructure projects and advanced technologies of all kinds.
  • The US is by far the largest market for engineering staffing in the world with about 24% of global revenue in 2023. It is the only country where engineering staffing revenue exceeds $10 billion. Europe—in particular the UK—and Australia are also large engineering staffing markets, while engineering accounts for a greater share of temporary staffing in the Middle East than in any other region.
  • Engineers are a critical part of R&D and implementation in industries as diverse as food manufacturing, power generation, and medical devices. However, there is a global and intensifying shortage of engineering talent that is creating opportunities for staffing companies who are able to build relationships with engineering talent.
  • Merger and acquisition activity in the engineering staffing space has been high since the pandemic, with close to 70 report transactions since the beginning of 2021. Firms are looking to improve their financial positions, either by strengthening their core competencies via acquisition or divestiture or by diversifying into new geographies, industries, or services where they see opportunity.
  • US engineering temporary staffing revenue has performed quite strongly relative to the US staffing industry as a whole, with demand sustained by a number of bills that allocate significant funding to boost domestic infrastructure and manufacturing in the transportation, telecom, construction, and energy industries.
  • In the UK, engineering staffing is expected to continue to outperform the market as a whole going forward as engineers remain in high demand. UK employment in engineering, science, research, and technology positions overall is predicted by the UK Skills Imperative 2035 to be 13% greater in 2035 than in 2025—more than three times the increase projected for all UK employment (4.3%).
