Eurovision Semi-Final 2023

The first round of semi-finals for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest kicked off last night (9th May) and saw countries compete for a place in the Grand Final.

Fifteen countries- like Israel, Moldova and Sweden- took part in the first semi-final but only 10 acts made it through to Saturday’s show.

Sadly, it was the end of the road for Azerbaijan’s TuralTuranX, Netherlands’ Mia Nicolai & Dion Cooper, Latvia’s Sudden Lights and Malta’s The Busker.

We also said goodbye to Ireland’s Wild Youth, who were previously tipped as the “dark horses” of the competition by Virgin Radio’s Graham Norton.

You can see the 10 acts that made the final below:

Croatia: Let 3 – Mama ŠČ!

Moldova: Pasha Parfeni – Soarele si luna

Switzerland: Remo Forrer – Watergun

Finland: Käärijä – Cha Cha Cha

Czechia: Vesna – My Sister’s Crown

Israel: Noa Kirel – Unicorn

Portugal: Mimicat – Ai coração

Sweden: Loreen – Tattoo

Serbia: Luke Black – Samo mi se spava

Norway: Alessandra – Queen of Kings

The second semi-final will be taking place on Thursday (11th May) and another 16 countries will be competing for a spot in the Grand Final.

Cyprus, Greece, Poland are among the participants taking part tomorrow, which will see 10 more countries qualify for Saturday’s show.

Entrants from the Big Five- UK, France, Spain and Italy- have already qualified along with Eurovision 2022 winner Ukraine, who automatically qualified because of their victory last year. It’s kind of a complicated voting process, so we’ve tried to clear it up with our ultimate guide to the Eurovision semi-finals.

Mae Muller, who is representing the United Kingdom in the competition, joined the Graham Norton Show with Waitrose on the weekend to chat about her “game plan” for the upcoming final, which you can read about here.

You can watch Mae performing during the Eurovision final on 13 May on BBC One and iPlayer at 8pm.
