It amazes me that with the hundreds of Millions of Dollars that F1 Generates, that they don't have Airport style crash tenders at strategic places around the track.
I guess the bosses don't see the risk being worth the financial costs.

first, the usual one someone has a car accident, the shoes goes off. it must be a ritual
second, he went exterior (out of his body) for a moment and then the idea to loose his kid was stronger than the idea to give up. luckily he had something to fight for.

Incredible the ability to remain calm among the chaos and despite two unsuccessful attempts to escape initially, still has the presence of mind to try again and make out alive. In their world their brains adjust to being able to process things extremely quickly, no doubt that is what saved him.
