The charts below, based on data collected for the Executive Education Ranking of 2023, explore the most frequent topics of business schools, the interests of the participants and their evaluations of teaching. Revenues pick up after the pandemic hit uptake of lucrative short courses, while students return to school for in-person learning. And what are the open enrollment course participants like, from gender, age, seniority and company size to MBA history?
More than 60 percent of executive education program participants rate learning “new skills” 10 out of 10 for importance, but judged that schools’ performance did not match that weighting. Business schools performed better on faculty quality, also considered particularly important by students.
Almost all executive education providers teach leadership and strategy, followed by finance and innovation. Less than half of schools now teach the Covid-19-linked restructuring, while artificial intelligence and machine learning are a more popular topic in open enrollment programs than in customized courses.
Executive education, traditionally a highly lucrative part of business school program offerings, has been hit hard by covid-19. But revenue from open enrollment and personalized courses has increased significantly as the market recovers after the height of the pandemic.
Business schools are returning to more face-to-face teaching as the impact of Covid lessens. Globally, business schools reported a 23 percentage point increase in participants attending fully face-to-face courses, while the increase was 33 percentage points in the UK.
Women make up nearly half of the participants in open enrollment executive education programs in the US and Canada, but less than a third in the Asia-Pacific region. Most of the participants are on average 40 years old, most in senior management positions. In Western countries, about a fifth of the participants have an MBA, while the figure is higher elsewhere.
