GREENCASTLE, Ind. — It’s not every day that we get the opportunity to review a kartbut that day has officially arrived with the sling eGX racing kart concept. Yes, “e” stands for electric, as this go-kart concept is motivated by a pair of electrics. battery Packs that feed a single electric motor.
Most of the electric karts we’ve tested have been the ones you’d find at K1 Speed locations or other go-kart companies like that. They top speed around 45mph and drive decently well, but after driving this Honda kart going back to any other karting venue will be a bit disappointing. Perhaps even more impressive than the way it drives, though, is the modular design and engineering that went into the battery pack system.
Each eGX Racing Kart Concept gets its power from two 1,314 kilowatt-hour battery packs, which Honda says are good for 35-45 minutes of racing. Housed in pods on either side of the controller, they can be swapped out (as seen below) with fresh batteries in seconds. Each battery pack weighs 22.7 pounds, and while that makes them a bit heavy, the handles on the packs allow for easy maneuvering when transporting or installing on go-karts. We personally witnessed how quickly it can be done – we’re talking seconds here, not minutes. Fully charging a pack from 0 to 100% takes around five hours, so it’s best to have spares on hand, but the idea behind these battery packs is that they can be used in more than just this go-kart. For example, future electrical products from Honda, such as generatorselectric lawn products, etc., could draw power from these same units.
As for the kart itself, Honda is using a proprietary electric motor producing an undisclosed number of ponies with a Honda Performance Development (HPD) racing software control module. It has a Parolin chromoly frame, alloy wheels, and 7.6-inch tires. Brake rotor. Honda says all-in, the kart weighs around 230 pounds.
Behind the wheel of the kart, what immediately catches your eye is the electric motor and its tuning. Most karts in casual karting places are pretty conservative with their torque delivery, which is good for beginners who might turn in instantly if given full torque right away. The HPD software is noticeably more aggressive in its torque delivery, and while it’s still not enough to spin in a circle from a stop, acceleration and pedal response are closer to that instant vertigo you’d expect from an electric motor. The eGX accelerates quickly to its top speed of about 45 mph, then changes direction with all the alacrity you’d expect from a top-tier go-kart chassis.
Braking was barely necessary on the small race track Honda set up for our tests, but controlling the rear end through light pedal swipe and small throttle lifts was consistent and predictable. The kart’s balance is spectacular, which can be attributed in part to the clever placement of those heavy battery packs squarely in the center next to the driver. The seat holds you steady and the steering wheel is in a pretty nice position. It is full of buttons and also a screen to monitor the kart.
All of these qualities make the eGX a riot to drive on a karting circuit. You sit compressed in the racing cube, and since it’s a go-kart, every crack and crevice of the road at the Putnam Park Road circuit is felt through the body. All inputs are heavy and the throttle pedal is especially pleasant to use, responding to the small inputs you make to improve your mid-corner line in a predictable and easy-to-learn manner. It’s a little smile machine in the best of ways, and easily the most fun we’ve ever had in a kart.
A bright future awaits us in the land of electric karts if this experience is anything to go by. This type of battery swapping technology and powertrain technology is merely a concept at the moment, according to Honda, but we can’t wait to see what goes into production. The world of karting is where race car drivers start, and as more and more electric racing series appear online, it’s vital that newcomers get into electric karts that are worth their while.
