One of the many interruptions the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix does not take place What has caused it is the development programs of the teams, with several squadrons planning to bring large update packages to the race. Formula 1 technical expert Mark Hughes explains what effect the cancellation of the event will have on those plans, especially as the next round is in Monaco, an outlier in terms of circuit style…

Mercedes, Ferrari and AlphaTauri had confirmed their plans to introduce significant improvements to their cars for the Imola race and they probably weren’t the only ones.

Mercedes’ update is particularly significant because it is the first planned since the team acknowledged that it had simply gotten this car wrong, that the aerodynamic concept it kept faith with last year was simply “wrong” in the words of the team boss. . Toto Wolff.

Front suspension, bodywork and floor updates for the W14 were due to appear at Imola, with the aim of providing a more stable aerodynamic platform for the car.

The W14’s biggest shortcoming so far has been rear grip in high-speed corners and Imola would have been a good test of how effective the update was in addressing that.

Instead, the update will make its debut next weekend in Monaco. Although there is a distinct absence of high-speed sections here, the update will still be relevant and running this specification will give the team useful data ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix the following week, on a circuit with many high-speed sections.

Likewise, Ferrari has revised the upper part of the bodywork as part of a package of changes that began in Miami with the new floor.

There are also rumors of a revised suspension. The aerodynamic improvements scheduled for Imola are expected to be seen in Monaco.

The SF23’s deficit so far has been tricky balance and inconsistent high-speed cornering. But his speed in and through slow corners has been a real strength and Monaco should see him at his best, especially given Charles Leclerc’s renowned speed around here.

Ferrari’s new floor (Miami, below, compared to Baku, above) features a more hooded outer edge in the front section, revised vortex-generating shapes, and a steeper ramp in front of the rear wheels.

AlphaTauri continues to address a weakness in its car’s low-speed cornering performance and updates planned for Imola included another new floor (a development of the one unveiled in Melbourne) to improve the car’s aerodynamics at high rear clearances.

This will be particularly relevant for Monaco and the update will take place there.

There’s always a greater risk of running new body parts around the street circuit with its unforgiving walls, but because all three of these teams’ parts were planned for Imola, they probably would have been on the Monaco cars anyway.

The fact that Imola does not go ahead means that the teams’ production departments will at least have a few more days to make spare parts.
