Have you ever wanted to live in your own fairytale country house?

If you have £1.4 million to spare, this could be your reality.

The five-bedroom house, based in Saffron Walden, is a ‘stunning Grade II listed country house ornmy located in the heart of the city’ and dates from 1820.

The unique residence, which also features approximately half an acre of land, was built by local bank manager Jabez Gibson and is currently known as Gloriana.

As the story goes, the Gloriana was named ‘Reed Lodge’ for the owner, who first built it on the site of a dilapidated barn.

It is packed with charming features, including a thatched roof, carved stone fireplaces, stone mullioned windows and three Tudor-style fireplaces.

In addition, the property has a secret tunnel leading from the house to one of the banks in the middle of Saffron Walden, although the entrance has since been cemented over.

With five reception rooms and a home office, Gloriana is the perfect place to entertain family and friends.

Hosts can enjoy a sleek kitchen with granite countertops and handcrafted cabinets, boot storage, a cozy den, a lounge with an open fireplace, and a work-from-home office.

The windows also provide majestic views over the stunning garden, making for a picturesque setting while cooking or socializing.

Below the house is a basement, which has the potential to be converted into living space subject to approval, while a laundry room can be found above.

The five bedrooms, one of which is ensuite, are spacious and well lit, with ornate window designs and sloped walls to add character.

If you prefer the outdoors, the house has a south-facing garden that is mainly grassed, with a number of mature trees providing privacy, as well as a wooden shed.

Additionally, a driveway with wrought iron gates provides off-street parking, but planning permission has been obtained for a double garage.

Plus, there’s a toilet in the main bathroom (Image: Cheffins)

The residence is featured in the book Ornés Cottages: The Charms of the Simple Life by Roger White, which came out in 2017.

This style of architecture was part of the Romantic movement in the 18th and 19th centuries, with Queen Charlotte’s Cottage in Kew Gardens being an early example. Ornées cabins were usually built as rustic homes for the wealthy, in the style of a typical chocolate box cabin.

That’s certainly the case here, as Gloriana looks like something straight out of a storybook.

Location wise it is situated in the center of Saffron Walden on Audley Road. The nearest station, Audley End, is approximately two miles away, with regular services to Liverpool Street taking less than an hour.
