The 10th installment in the Fast and Furious series went into action this weekend, beating Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 from first place and easily securing first place at the box office. According to estimates, โFast Universal pictures on Sunday.
It sits on the low end of the series’ openings, which peaked with the launch of “Furious 7” for $142.2 million, the only film in the series to surpass the $100 million mark from the start . The domestic debut of “Fast X” ranks just above the top three. The last film, “F9”, opened in 2021 with $70 million.
But again, this is a series that has typically made most of its money internationally, often over 70%. True to its form, it’s turbo-powered overseas. โAlmost the largest market was China at $78.3 million, followed by Mexico at $16.7 million. And it adds up to a $319 million worldwide debut — the franchise’s third-biggest.
“It’s a global franchise with a very broad audience,” said Jim Orr, Universal’s director of domestic sales. “The topics resonate around the world.”
Directed by Louis Leterrier (who succeeded Justin Lin during production) brings “Almost . The growing cast also includes Jason Statham, Charlize Theron, Scott Eastwood and Helen Mirren.
The film reportedly cost $340 million to produce, not including marketing.
The reviews for AP’s Fast Mark Kennedy wrote in his review that “it’s almost become ridiculous, like it’s inhaled too much of its own fumes” and that it’s also “enormously silly and stupidly entertaining.”
According to polls, the audience was 29% Caucasian, 29% Hispanic, and 21% Black, and 58% were between the ages of 18 and 34. They gave the film a CinemaScore of B+.
On his third weekend Disney and Marvel’s ” Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 โ earned an estimated $32 million in North America and placed second. It has now earned $266.5 million domestically and $659.1 million worldwide.
Third place went to another Universal juggernaut, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is now in its seventh weekend and available to rent on VOD. Nonetheless, the company generated an additional $9.8 million in revenue in North America, bringing the domestic total to $549.3 million.
” Book Club: The Next Chapter added $3 million on its second weekend and took fourth place, while “Evil Dead Rise” rounded out the top five on its fifth weekend with $2.4 million.
“Mario” and “Fast X” are just the latest Success Stories for Universal, after hits like “Cocaine Bear” and “M3GAN”. And later this summer, on July 21st, they will be Christopher Nolan’s ” Oppenheimer.”
“Universal has simply thrived as a studio like no other because of its incredible library of films across all genres,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. “They have developed a release strategy that is really picture-perfect so far.”
However, “Fast X” does not have a completely open runway. Next weekend there will be plenty of competition in Disney’s The Little Mermaid live-action, in addition to a slew of crowd favorites hoping to garner an audience over Memorial Day weekend, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus in ” You hurt my feelings โ and the broad comedy โ About my fatherโwith Sebastian Maniscalco and Robert De Niro.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday in US and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. The final domestic figures will be released on Monday.
