Ford teased the automaker’s upcoming three-row electric SUV on Monday, promising efficiency that will produce sufficient range without bulking up battery packs.
This model is planned for 2025 together with the Project T3 van unveiled in March, with both models using Ford’s Generation 2 EV architecture. At Ford’s Capital Markets Day on Monday, CEO Jim Farley and head of product development and CTO Doug Field gave a hint of what’s in store for these next-generation electric vehicles.
“Ford’s Generation One was a scrappy effort: little investment, really small teams, and pushing against a big organization that hadn’t yet endorsed or embraced electric vehicles,” Field said of efforts like the F-150 Lightningwhich he still calls “great products” and partly why he came to Ford from Apple.
Starting point of the Ford Gen 2 electric SUV
“Now we will go much further with our Gen 2 products. We will invest in Gen 2 only in those places and segments where we know we can win… starting with a full-size pickup truck that goes to the next level, and a three-seater SUV rows,” Field explained. “Our Gen 2 products will be unlike anything customers have seen, and that starts with not trying to be everything to everyone and making every possible flavor for every individual.”
Field said the three-row electric SUV will be “innovative,” while Farley described it as “like your own personal bullet train.” But it won’t be an electric version of an existing Ford SUV.
“Now we could have become an expedition in an EV, but it wouldn’t have been a very good EV and it wouldn’t have been a very good Expedition,” Field said. That’s partly because to get 300 miles of highway range, an Expedition would need a battery pack of about 150 kWh, adding to weight and cost, Field explained.
2025 Ford 3-Row SUV: It Won’t Be an Expedition EV
“There’s kind of an arms race going on in the industry to put bigger and bigger batteries into big EVs and try to make them like ICE vehicles,” Field said. “But the real battleground in electrification is efficiency.”
“We optimized it instead of compromising it,” Field said. “When we set out to build our Generation 2 three-row, we started by changing the way we think about lower rolling resistance tires, squeezing every last ounce of efficiency out of the powertrain. And in computer simulations we removed a lot of mass, we lowered the ride height, we changed the aerodynamics. The result is a different product.”
This approach yields a 350-mile-range three-row family SUV with a 100-kwh battery pack, which can still cover more than 300 miles while cruising at 70 mph, Field said, along with a charge that can recover 150 miles of reach in 10 minutes.

Field also said the electric SUV will be longer, sleeker and quieter than conventional large SUVs. Gen 2 EVs will also feature a new software and hardware platform that will enable Level 3 driver assistance functionality, it added.
The three-row SUV and pickup will be high-volume models. farley said Ford Model E Division is targeting production of 1.2 million to 1.3 million EVs annually by the end of 2026. Ford is also asking distributors to get on board with a new EV-heavy business model or leave the mark.
