FORMULA WHY: The reasons why Formula 1 drivers need to be at peak fitness

To drive at the speed they do, Formula 1 drivers have to be incredibly fit – but how fit do they have to be? Well, in the latest episode of the brand new F1 podcast, Formula Why, the gang explores that very question.

In the podcast, which will be hosted by Katie Osborne and Christian Hewgill, the pair will respond with “Why?” Questions are asked each week with the aim of giving fans more knowledge about how Formula 1 works.

This week, their challenge is to find out why Formula 1 drivers need to be at their peak fitness level, and to help with that, they are joined by a valued group of guests knowledgeable on the subject.

ACROSS THE GRILLE: Mario Theissen on leading BMW’s F1 efforts, teaming up with a young Vettel and Sauber’s one-two in Montreal

The duo is joined by motorsport scientist Dr. Diandra Leslie Pelecky, who explores the ‘extreme’ F1 driver experience. She shares insights into the importance of fitness over the decades, explains why drivers need a lot of neck and arm strength behind the wheel of an F1 car and much more.

Also joining the podcast is former Formula 1 driver Alexander Rossi, who explains how much weight he’s had to lose to perform in the car and how important neck strength is when F1 teams are looking to sign you – and why going shopping is difficult.

Finally, Hintsa Performance’s Antti Kontas, former trainer of four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, explains the real reason why the neck is so important to a rider’s vision.

He also explains why they require such incredible stamina before providing an insight into what a typical training session for the drivers looks like and why women are more than physically capable of competing in Formula 1.
