Relax in Los Angeles Maybourne style
When the Maybourne group (they from Claridge’s and The Connaught) took over the former Montage Beverly Hills hotel, you could almost hear the cheers. The best of British hospitality in La-La Land is an endlessly attractive proposition; And while the rollout is being done in stages (the latest news: the arrival of Dante Beverly Hills, a satellite of the cult bar Greenwich Village, to the hotel’s rooftop in July), the spa, thankfully, is 100 percent in functioning.
Like the rest of the hotel, it feels airy and indulgent: a palette of fresh sorbet and lots of light, but rich materials (note the bright mosaics surrounding the mineral pool at the spa’s double-height entrance). Treatments are serious – clinical strength beauty tests The products are used in facial oxygen, for example, and Nuface Microcurrent wands deployed to work on eye and lip lines. After all, we’re in California, so CBD oils and muds also show up in massages and anti-aging treatments (great for fighting inflammation). maybournebeverlyhills.comtreatments from $180
In Rome, enjoy the water in style
All hotel opening roads seem to have led to Rome in 2023, and everyone from Bulgari to Edition to InterContinental will be planting flags on their hills. Six Senses Rome, which opened in March, is something of a mixed bag: the public spaces have perhaps too much of a design vibe that could be anywhere in the world; but the food is excellent (and on-brand: a spaghetti alle vongole was sprinkled with an incredibly delicious, healthy, delicious seaweed powder). The rooms are comfortable but a bit nondescript; suites, on the other hand, lean toward Wow Land, with terraces, travertine kitchens and views of the basilica.
The unconditional win is the spa, which features a hydro circuit (caldarium, tepidarium, frigidarium) that nods to ancient history and innovative half-hour “biohacks” (hypoxic breathing training in a cellular gym, face mask with light LED) that are fully available in 2023. I received a massage from an impressively intuitive therapist, then put an LED mask on my face while sipping a fennel tisane for 20 minutes, which left me feeling like I’d also undergone an illuminating and firming facial treatment. seissenses.comtreatments from €45
Sydney’s new wellness nest
The Capella, which opened its doors last spring and instantly raised the bar to tiptoe levels in Sydney’s hotel scene, has much to recommend it: warm, refined staff, a location within easy reach of the harbor and an exceptional collection of contemporary art of 1,500 pieces. And its Auriga spa: spread across the hotel’s sixth floor are four large, high-ceilinged treatment rooms, each cleverly fitted under one of the listed building’s original copper light fixtures, framing James-style squares of sky Turrell (and they saturate each space with natural light, which somehow feels very Oz).
The showpiece here is the 20m-long heated indoor training and vitality pool, headed by a movement platform for yoga and stretching sessions. My fairly simple one-hour massage was very satisfying, between the sunlight streaming in and the skill on display, but I left wishing I’d tried the “Connect to Country” experience: black jade, Azorian gold, mookalite, and more. stones gathered. With the permission of the first Australians, from remote points (the Northern Territory, Pilbara) they are heated and used to loosen muscles, memories and anything else that is receptive to them, along with oils infused with native botanicals. capellahotels.comtreatments from AU$150
And back to Les Sources, in Bordeaux
Caudalie is a familiar name to skincare experts: Agustino Bader can be the miracle man of the moment, and Dr. Barbara Sturm the reigning queen of serums, but Caudalie’s Resveratrol-based products continue to walk the scientific example that they have offered for two decades. Les Sources de Caudalie, the hotel-spa located among the vineyards of Château Smith Haut Lafitte, is a favorite spa destination among those who know the value of wine therapy (and a euro); The fact that the spa, where outside guests can book half-day Vine and Source rituals (and, during the week, individual treatments too), also draws on the waters of a 540m-deep hot spring, only adds to the that increase attractiveness.
An elegant and understated top-to-toe renovation is what has put it back on our radar: 40 rooms and 21 suites, three restaurants, hammam and all, now decorated in soft flamenco tones and tons of natural wood and stone, relaxing and spacious. sources-caudalie.comtreatment packages from €274
