“We are discussing whether we could formulate it better or not,” said Just.
While Fox News broadcast Trump’s speech live, MSNBC did not. Neither does CNN. This is in contrast to when Trump was charged with separate charges in New York in April, when CNN aired much of a similar Trump speech on the eve of his indictment. That was before former CNN boss Chris Licht, who had been trying to appeal to Republican viewers, was ousted.
“We’re not live-streaming his statements because, quite frankly, he’s saying a lot of things that are untrue and, quite frankly, potentially dangerous,” said CNN’s Jake Tapper.
After the speech ended, CNN aired a nearly two-minute clip of Trump, who Tapper followed with several fact-checks.
“As for trying to destroy American democracy, we all know who actually tried to undo an election,” he said. “It’s not Joe Biden. It’s Mr. Trump.”
MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow made similar comments before the station decided not to live stream Trump’s speech. Excerpts from the remarks were shown later.
“There is a cost for us as a news organization to knowingly spread untrue things,” Maddow said.
