Google is said to plan to unveil a foldable Pixel phone at its next IoT developer event on May 10, with the device’s full launch planned for sometime in June. According to CNBC, the device will measure 5.8 inches diagonally when closed and will unfold into a 7.6-inch tablet. That puts it solidly in competition with those of equal size. Details about the internals of Google’s foldable phone are scant, but it’s said to come with the same Tensor 2 chip that Google put into its latest Pixel phones. Google may even be packaging it with Google’s six-month-old pixel clock.
Being late to the gadget party has become a recurring theme for Google. The company was slow to release its first smartwatch, introducing the Pixel Watch years after Apple, Samsung, and Garmin flooded the market. Earlier this year, Google panicked by pulling out Bard, its generative AI chat service, in an effort to catch up with Microsoft’s ChatGPT and Bing Chat, both of which are powered by another competitor, OpenAI.
Samsung has been reliably rolling out multi-screen hinged devices for the past few years, but foldable phones are still relatively new and represent only a slice of the global smartphone market. Turning that competitive spirit on its head, Samsung is taking steps to compete with the likes of Google and Apple in the news distribution business. This week, Samsung launched its Samsung News mobile application, a rebranded and renewed version of the Samsung Free news-focused service.
The service works much like Apple News, featuring a variety of syndicated stories that the reader can peruse from news outlets like news weekVice, Glamor, the new york post officeand Bloomberg Media. The service is available as a beta app right now on the Samsung app store. Also, if you have the Samsung Free app on your phone, you’ll notice that it’s been renamed to Samsung News. Samsung says it will be available only on “select devices” for now, moving to all Samsung phones in the near future.

Mysterious Humane Device
Humane, a company founded by a couple of former Apple employees, introduces a new portable AI thing.
The company’s co-founder, Imran Chaudhri, showed off the device during a TED talk on Thursday, which was leaked to Reverse the day before it was supposed to be released. In the leaked video, Chaudhri wears the device in his chest pocket and taps various parts to make it answer questions, translate speech and project video calls in his hand. The device is apparently platform independent and does not need to be paired with a smartphone to work. There are no details about how it connects to the internet, what its battery life and performance is like, or whether Humane is powering the backend or outsourcing the work to other service providers.
