I always thought that there are key moments in the life of a business in which the future of the company is won or lost and that success is never a straight line. What happens when you are not aware of when those moments are or do not know what to do when they happen? What decisions do you make during critical moments?

In The Small Business Radio Show this week, steve mckee helps identify how to recognize these turns and what actions to take when they occur. He is a co-founder of McKee Wallwork, a nationally recognized marketing consulting firm. He is the author of the book on change management called “Turns: Where Business Is Won and Lost”. Steve was a columnist for Businessweek.com for a decade and currently writes a popular monthly leadership column for SmartBrief.

Steve believes that we tend to think of life as a series of straight lines, occasionally punctuated by twists and turns. In reality, life is a continuous series of twists and turns only occasionally interrupted by stretches of smooth, straight road. As he says, “the path cannot stay straight forever”.

Steve teaches us how many gyrations are around us on any given day, and that some gyrations that we don’t think much of end up being very important.

Steve emphasizes that it is not a simple matter to say “that was a good deed” or “that was a bad deed.” Assessing the success of a spin becomes more complicated than this rudimentary analysis.

He shares eight principles on how to best prepare for those curves and how to reduce uncertainty when making decisions, seeking answers, or changing your perspective, people, processes, and profit.

The near-death turn Steve’s company went through was partly responsible for his writing this book. It draws from a variety of fields beyond business, from sports to history, politics, religion, and music.
