Honda said today that it plans to launch its first electric vehicle based on e:Architecture in North America in 2025.
That’s a year ahead of the Japanese automaker. originally said it would introduce vehicles based on its in-house vehicle platform, which places greater emphasis on software and over-the-air updates to Tesla.
Honda said in a statement that the 2025 vehicle will feature a new internal operating system, which will “enable the continued advancement of vehicle features and services for customers even after vehicle purchase.”
A newcomer to the EV race in North America, Honda has so far leaned on GM to bring out its EVs, building on the Detroit automaker’s Ultium architecture and EV platform. The electric vehicles that Honda developed with GM, the Prologue and the Acura ZDX, will be available in North America in 2024.
Honda said its first vehicle based on e:Architecture will be “a midsize to full-size EV model,” disappointing the few of us here in North America who prefer small cars. TechCrunch has reached out to Honda to ask if it plans to introduce smaller electric vehicles in the United States.
