Some rising stars don’t announce themselves right away. Only when you have seen them in two projects do you begin to understand their scope. Those old enough will remember Daniel Day-Lewis’ explosive film entry, playing both the prudish Cecil Vyse (A room with a view) and wild street punk Johnny (My beautiful laundry) in two opposite but perfectly valued performances that arrived the same year. I felt the same way when I saw Harris Dickinson in Sadness trianglewhich found him playing a vapid, elegant model on a disastrous cruise. I couldn’t believe it was the same actor I had seen in Tiny Independent. Bullyportraying a working-class father who faces his responsibilities years after leaving the family home.
It doesn’t help that Dickinson is so pretty, as he inevitably finds himself typecast. And it will probably be more so since his last film. little girlan erotic drama with Nicole Kidman that places him firmly in the Hollywood heartthrob category. Louis Wise knows him as he takes this latest leap in his career and discovers why he remains so determined to do things on his own terms. He currently has projects to choose from, in addition to his own production company through which he has directed his first feature film. I’ll be fascinated to see where things go.
Are you familiar with This week’s aestheteMr. Bingo? The illustrator and artist became famous for his Hate Mail, a service through which he sent postcards, upon request, to strangers. They were fabulously rude. Since then, he has gained a cult following and has become a public speaker. He also took a year off and wandered the world naked. Given his strident reputation, I was surprised to discover in our story that he is as vulnerable as he is funny. I recommend that you look at their Instagram. @mr_bingstagramif you need to laugh.
Are you a fan of darts? The very British pastime played in pubs across the country has long lacked the sleek commercial glamor offered by more established sports. Recently, however, a broader fan base has been building up around its players, inspired by young mavericks like Luke Littler, the teenage darts prodigy who made headlines when he reached the world championship final last December. In the run-up to this year’s tournament, Rosanna Dodds played along and its exuberant defenders in an attempt to understand why it has captivated a new generation. A combination of kebabs, copious amounts of alcohol and fancy costumes seem to play their part.
On a more sophisticated note, we tour the growing bar scene in Athens, a city that has been the center of an extraordinary resurgence. Chris Kontos is the man spearheading the natural wine renaissance, as well as fostering new neighborhood gathering places. Chris Cotonou is the man Getting to the heart of the story..
