This summer I’m heading to San Sebastián to embark on an eight-day trek along the Spanish north coast to Bilbao, as part of the Camino de Santiago. This is the first time I’ve signed up for a 14-mile-a-day vacation with no pre-booked accommodation, so I’m counting on recommendations from friends, YouTubers, and Shirley MacLaine. The way to the company. Here are some of the essentials I’ll be taking with me…
Columbia Newton Ridge 24l Hiking Backpack
This backpack has an integrated rain cover and a waterproof main compartment, which will come in handy during summer rains. I’ve also heard that your bag should weigh no more than 10 percent of your weight when full to avoid back pain, and this one is designed to distribute weight evenly. Wish me luck. £80, columbiasportswear.es
Striped Organic Cotton Toast Pillowcase
My best friend’s mother, who travels the Camino every summer, said that a useful and less common item on her packing list is a pillowcase that you can put anywhere every night. hostel you end up sleeping I’m taking the tip and packing this soft organic cotton from Toast. £19, toast
Merrell Moab 3, women’s hiking shoes
Lightweight, made from recycled material, and neutral in color, these Merrell Moabs are a good choice for a sneaker/hiking shoe hybrid that looks good on or off the trail. £110, merrell.com
Oakley Actuator sunglasses
I was looking for a pair of minimalist sunglasses that could take me from a hiking trip to a general day-to-day without compromising lens quality, and I found this pair from Oakley that fit the bill. £138, oakley.com
Craghoppers Nosibotanical Bralio Linen Blend Shirt
A linen shirt is not exactly a hiking garment, but since we will have a night out in San Sebastián and another in Bilbao, I am taking this wardrobe staple with me. Easy to pair with any bottom and ideal for summer nights, this Craghoppers has the added benefit of being treated with durable insect repellent. £50, craghoppers.com
Mantle The Face Jelly Super-Hydrating Moisturizing Gel
One item that has become my favorite in recent weeks is this super lightweight, hydrating gel from Mantle. I have tried all kinds of water-based gels and creams, but I think many promise to be lightweight and then end up settling on the skin just like an oil-based formula would. It disappears into the skin within seconds of applying it and is rich in antioxidants, making it the perfect moisturizer. £64, hellomantle.com
