Since the launch of Formula 1’s Drive to Survive Netflix docuseries in 2019, many of the sport’s personalities have become household names, including Haas team principal Günther Steiner. He recently revealed how he’s adapted to his growing popularity since the show began.
Steiner spoke in an interview ESPN at the Miami GP, one of three home races for the American Haas team this season, and he described the difference in his life before and after the series aired.

“A little less stopped on the street, less selfish of people, but otherwise my workload is the same,” Steiner said. “To be honest, you don’t recognize you until you’re around.
“I always think I wasn’t looking for it, I wasn’t expecting it to come – but it does come and you just adapt. I think we have to give something back to the fans if they like it. I can’t say, “Oh, I’m not doing anything,” because obviously they come to me because they like something they saw.
“It’s a little bit more when you go out. You have to think about where you’re going and where you’re staying because on the race weekend it’s not a good idea to go to certain restaurants because then you don’t get any rest.”
When asked what aspect of his personality he thinks made him so popular with fans, Steiner reluctantly replied, “It’s not my looks, first of all. I think it’s just because I say a lot of what I think.
“I wouldn’t say I don’t have a filter, but I think if I think I can say it. And I should say it instead of going through the houses to deliver a message. Over the years I’ve just let people know what I think, whether they like it or not.

“I don’t want to offend anyone, I never try to offend anyone and you have to accept that some people don’t like that. I agree.”
Steiner also published a book entitled Survive to drive a car That came out in April and he revealed how the idea for a book detailing the events of the 2022 season from his perspective came about.
“Again, it was a bit like Drive to Survive. At first I didn’t want to be on a TV show. Someone came up to me and said you should do a book. I said I won’t do a book, it’s a biography, I said I won’t do it,” Steiner revealed.
“He said no. The idea behind the book is like a journal — what you do, how you live your life, and that was in 2021. And I said, ‘How do you know something could happen in 2022?'” It might be the most boring book ever!’
“They assured me that wasn’t going to happen, and I think they were right.”
“They knew something I didn’t know at the time and that was what made my decision. I wrote it with a ghostwriter and he was very good and that’s how the idea came about.
“And when I first read it as part of the audio book, I realized it’s pretty good. It is also intended for the big F1 fan but can also be read for entertainment.”
