What if NFL players did not wear protection? The American game seems more head on whilst from what I've seen Rugby is more diagonal with less head on impact.

I have like looking back at Miami Dolphins NFL American football playing with F1 drivers and I can remember Alex Albon saying rugby is better.
I have no idea about NFL but these lads seem like top nice blokes

Rugby League and Rugby Union I find more exciting to watch. The reason the NFL is so big is they stop the game and sell you everything from insurance to burgers. Rinse and repeat. No commercials in Rugby. Rugby is much safer.
I prefer American football to rugby, but the greed and corporatism that's infected the nfl is what ruins it. Constant commercials that even the players are angry about during the game

I have played rugby league, and have supported At Helens for 60years, and Brisbane Broncos. I played at fly half and weighed 65kg and was playing against players weighing 98kg, NO PADDING. One quote about the game is that "it's a game for gentleman played by hooligans". RL is a far tougher game.
