A Ukrainian naval drone has struck a Russian tanker in the Kerch Strait near Crimea, in the latest in a series of bold attacks that signal that Kiev’s use of unmanned vehicles is becoming more aggressive and effective.
The attack on the vessel occurred early Saturday morning according to Russian reports and a Ukrainian official with knowledge of the operation.
It was the second attack on a Russian ship in 24 hours, after Friday’s damages to a warship off the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, and arrived just before Kyiv warned that all Russian Black Sea ports would become “war risk” areas.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Saturday’s operation was carried out by the Security Service of Ukraine, or SBU, in cooperation with the country’s navy.
A video released by Ukrainian authorities that could not be immediately verified showed a naval drone striking the side of the tanker, which was identified by Russian officials as a SIG. It was operating under the Russian flag and has 11 crew members.
Two tugboats were sent to help the ship, which had lost power due to engine room damage, Russian state news agency Tass said, citing the Marine Rescue Coordination Center in Novorossiysk. The agency said the crew suffered no serious injuries and no fuel was released into the sea.
Photos of the interior of the SIG released by Russia’s Telegram channel Baza showed damage to several compartments of the ship and debris strewn about the rooms.
Vladimir Rogov, who heads the occupation administration in the part of southern Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Oblast that is under Russian control, wrote in Telegram that the blast was visible to Crimean residents.
He shared a recording of what he said was a distress call made by the ship’s crew to 911 where a man can be heard saying that “the engine room is completely flooded” and the ship was unable to move .
The SIG has been subject to US sanctions since 2019 for supplying jet fuel to forces fighting for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Rogov said the vessel recently returned from Syria, where it delivered oil products for the Russian military.
“Such an attack is intended not only to force Russia back to the shameful grain deal, but also to partially undermine the logistical capabilities of the Russian military in the Middle East,” he said.
Ukraine has not released any official statement claiming responsibility for the attack, in line with its wartime policy of rarely confirming or denying attacks inside Russia and in occupied Crimea. But in a tacit admission, the head of the SBU Vasyl Malyuk said that any attack “on the ships of the Russian Federation or the Crimean bridge is an absolutely logical and effective step towards the enemy.”
“Such special operations are conducted in the territorial waters of Ukraine and are completely legal,” he said.

The British Defense Ministry said on Saturday that the Olenegorsky Gornyak “almost certainly suffered serious damage”.
Since then she has been “the largest Russian warship badly damaged or destroyed”. Ukraine has sunk flagship cruiser Moskva in April last year and “a heavy blow” to Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, the defense ministry said.

On Saturday, in a further indication that Kiev is stepping up pressure on Russia in the Black Sea, Ukraine’s maritime authority issued a warning that from this month “until further notice”, all Russian ports and approaches to them would be considered a “war risk zone”.
Russia and Ukraine had previously warned that any vessel found entering each other’s ports would be considered parties to the war and would respond with appropriate military action.
The alarm covers the ports of Anapa, Novorossiysk, Gelendzhik, Tuapse, Sochi and Taman, the State Hydrographic Office said.
The Ukrainian strikes follow a series of Russian missile and drone strikes on ports in the city of Odessa and the wider region that have targeted facilities used to export grain. They came on the heels of Moscow’s withdrawal from the UN-brokered deal that allowed grain to be transported across the Black Sea despite the war.
Malyuk has warned that attacks on Russian shipping will continue as long as they pose a threat to his country. Russian ships should “leave territorial waters of Ukraine and our land,” he said. “The sooner they do it, the better it will be for them.”
