The Republic of Ireland will become the first country in the world to introduce health warning labels on alcoholic products.

Stephen Donnelly, the Irish health minister, issued new regulations on Monday, but they will not come into force until 2026.

Labeling will warn consumers about the risks of consuming alcohol and will provide the caloric content of a product.

The Irish government said the regulations would align alcoholic products with requirements for food packaging.

Mr Donnelly said: “I am delighted that we are the first country in the world to take this step and introduce full health labeling for alcoholic products.

“I hope other countries follow our example.”

Consumers will be warned about the dangers of drinking during pregnancy, as well as the risks of fatal liver disease and cancers.

In January, Italy’s ambassador to Ireland told Irish broadcaster RTÉ that the plans were “totally blown out of proportion”.
