Lake Superior Community Partnership highlights vital role small businesses play in community

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – A new award and celebration aims to highlight the hard work of small businesses in Marquette County.

The Mather, Studio Dance Arts and Up North Lodge are being recognized for their contributions to Marquette County.

Lauren Rotundo, small business support specialist for the Lake Superior Community Association, says the opening of the West End Economic Center partly inspired these awards. She explains that the venue and catering for the awards ceremony will represent businesses that the Greater Ishpeming Negaunee Area Chamber of Commerce previously supported.

“We’re really highlighting West End businesses with our venue being The Mather and having input from our caterers like Mama Russo’s, Midtown Bakery and Doozer’s,” Rotundo said. “The Small Business Celebration is really about celebrating businesses throughout Marquette County.”

Each business represents the east, west and south sides of Marquette County. Up North Lodge General Manager Jesie Melchiori says she couldn’t be more honored to represent the southern region of the county.

“We are very proud of our community and supporting and giving back,” Melchiori said. “As well as offering great food for one and all.”

Rotundo says community members nominated these companies. She explains that nominations are then reviewed based on dedication and impact on the Marquette County economy.

“It’s really exciting for us that businesses like this are celebrated and highlighted throughout the night to give them a podium,” Rotundo said.

The awards ceremony will take place at The Mather on November 1.
