Mazda DX-Vision envisions a Dakar Rally sports car

Off road sport cars I am one thing. Porsche has the 911 Dakar, Lamborghinis has the Huracán Terratoand now Mazda has DX-Vision. Now before you grab your kodo design pitchforks, this is not a stock car. It was born from the imagination of a design intern at Mazda North America and exists only in pixel form.

The DX-Vision is an upscale sports coupe with three seats in the 1+2 position. The driver sits in the center as in a McLaren F1, and two passengers can sit side by side in the back. The car features a lot of Mazda design language, including the headlights that flow into a brand name five-sided grid and many complex compound curved surfaces.

The Mazda DX-Vision was created by Tiffany Yang, a transportation design student who is working on an MFA at the College for Creative Studies, one of the top industrial design schools in the country and a direct path to creating the sheet metal we see on the streets. Yang has previously interned at Königsegg AND Honda. At Mazda, he worked with actual company designers to develop DX-Vision as a thesis project.

“Mazda is very famous for Kodo design,” Yang he wrote on the company’s Japanese theme which translates to “soul of movement” in English. “Instead of having movement on the lateral surface, I wanted the flow to start at the front going through the vehicle and then connecting to the lateral surface. Fully expanding the Mazdaness throughout the vehicle. As if the whole car was a piece of sculpture, connecting from front to back.”

Mazda is best known for street racing and winning races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans with its rotary-engined sports cars, but explored rally racing in its distant past. In the 1980s he developed a Group B RX-7 before the class was banned, and also homologated the 323 gtx.

There are no plans to develop the DX-Vision for production. However, with Mazda going all-in on SUVs, plans for a RWD straight-six sedan also prioritize big luxury crossovers, everything is possible. Production sedans like the Crown Toyota and sports cars like the Porsche 911Dakar AND Lamborghini Huracán Terrato they may be commonplace in the future, and the current crop of design students will help keep them looking good.
