McLaren has published its second sustainability report, highlighting some of the improvements made across the organization over the past year and what’s to come in the future.

The Woking team’s 48-page report is broken down into four key pillars, covering the goals of Net Zero, a circular economy (minimizing resources and waste and maximizing value), diversity, equity and inclusion, and health and wellbeing.

net zero

In terms of its Net Zero efforts, McLaren has already achieved a 22% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to its 2019 baseline, including a 9% decrease in air transport emissions, saving enough electricity to power 100 average UK homes in a year. .

These numbers were achieved by using fewer materials to build their F1 cars and complementary changes, such as converting lights to LEDs and transporting more equipment to races by sea freight.

As for the future, McLaren wants to cut emissions in half by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2040, while using its platform to educate on climate action.

circular economy

By reducing construction waste, using resources more efficiently and better managing materials, McLaren has reported a 19% reduction in its total waste.

They have also saved nearly 400 cups of coffee a week and prevented almost 1,000 meals from going to waste by eliminating single-use plastics and donating unused food from the factory.

In the future, McLaren wants to take it a step further by developing a fully circular F1 car and, in turn, speed up the transition to a more circular economy.

Diversity, equity and inclusion

In a continued push to improve diversity and equal opportunity across sport, McLaren noted that 33% of its new starters through 2022 come from underrepresented backgrounds.

The team has also launched the McLaren Racing Engage alliance in 2021, reaching 4,000 students at events supported by its STEM ambassadors, while its STEM day program will roll out to UK schools in partnership with F1.

McLaren Origins: The history of the Formula 1 team

McLaren has declared its intention to be “the most diverse and inclusive team” in F1 in the future and, by 2030, aims to have 40% of its employees come from underrepresented groups.

Health & Wellness

Meanwhile, to help its staff feel their best on and off the job, McLaren says 6% of the team are mental health first responders, describing them as “a critical part of our support structure.” Along with this, webinars exploring the pressures on health and wellness have been organized to educate employees.
