MEA statement on Indians stranded in Sudan said Working on multiple options ntc

Hundreds of people have died in the ongoing fierce war between the army and the paramilitary in Sudan. In the midst of the war, thousands of Indians are also trapped in Sudan, for whom the Government of India is constantly making efforts to evacuate. Regarding this, once again the statement of the Ministry of External Affairs has come, in which it has been said that the Government of India is making every possible effort to ensure the safety of the Indians trapped in Sudan.

The Ministry of External Affairs said that we are also coordinating with other countries for the safe movement of those Indians, whose people are also stranded in Sudan and they want to evacuate them. Actually, the Ministry of External Affairs is in contact with the Sudanese authorities. At the same time, the Indian Embassy in Sudan is also in regular contact with the United Nations, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt and America.

The ministry said that we are making all preparations to evacuate the Indians. The Government of India is working on several options. Two Indian Air Force C-130J are currently stationed on standby in Jeddah, with INS Sumedha reaching Port Sudan. Preparations have been made, but any movement on the ground will depend on the security situation. Sudanese airspace is currently closed to all foreign aircraft. Overland movement also carries risks and logistical challenges.

Officials said that our embassy is in regular touch with the stranded Indians in Sudan and is negotiating for their safe movement. Also advising them to avoid unnecessary risk. As soon as there is an opportunity and the situation improves, further action will be taken.

What is happening in Sudan?

In the African country Sudan, a fierce war has been going on between the army and the paramilitary (paramilitary force) for several days. The paramilitary force waging war against the army is known here as the Rapid Support Force (RSF). The common people here are suffering badly in the war that broke out between the army and the RSF. The worst situation is in the capital Khartoum. Here the fight is going on for the occupation of all the important places including the airport and the station.

Why is the war going on in Sudan?

The conflict in Sudan is taking place between General Abdel-Fattah Burhan, the commander of the army, and General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, the head of the paramilitary force. General Burhan and General Dagalo, both were together earlier. The roots of the current conflict go back to April 2019. At that time, the public revolted against the then President of Sudan, Omar al-Bashir. Later the army overthrew the power of al-Bashir. The rebellion did not stop even after Bashir was ousted from power. Later an agreement was reached between the army and the protesters.

Under the agreement, a Sovereignty Council was formed and it was decided that elections would be held by the end of 2023. In the same year Abdalla Hamdok was appointed Prime Minister. But even this did not work. In October 2021, the army staged a coup. General Burhan became the chairman of the council and General Dagalo became the vice-chairman.

Why is it difficult to evacuate Indians?

, There are around 4 thousand Indians in Sudan. According to the information, most of the Indians are settled in four cities. One of these is Omdurman, the second is Kassala, the third is Gedaref or Al Qadarif, while the name of the fourth city is Wad Madani.

, The distance of two of these cities is more than 400 kilometers from the capital Khartoum, while the distance of one city is about 200 kilometers. One city is adjacent to the capital and its distance from Khartoum is just 25 kms. The most worrying thing is that there is no international airport in any of these four cities.

, There are only two international airports in Sudan. One is in the capital Khartoum and the other port is in Sudan. However, it is also very difficult to airlift people from here in the midst of an airstrike. This is possible only when there is a ceasefire.
