The FedEx robot was built for the company by Skilla Redwood City, California-based startup that specializes in developing robotic systems for various warehouse tasks, using AI.

Dexterity CEO Samir Menon says the robot built for FedEx uses generative artificial intelligence to figure out how to stack boxes of various types. It also uses AI to identify and grab the boxes. But these systems must be intertwined with careful engineering, Menon says.

Every time you place a box in a stack, the system uses force feedback to ensure the package fits perfectly and also scans the stack using cameras and depth sensors to see how it compares to your existing model. Any discrepancies will require the robot to adapt its stacking plan as it progresses.

The growth of e-commerce (and in particular Amazon) has turned package work into an innovative frontier for robot development. Amazon is currently being implemented thousands of more advanced robots while continuing to squeeze greater efficiency from the facilities where it stores and processes products.

Loading and unloading trucks “represents a more difficult challenge” than the picking work robots currently do in warehouses because it happens in a tight space with a variety of boxes, he says. Pulkit Agrawal, a professor at MIT who specializes in artificial intelligence and robotics. There are ways to design the system that can “reduce complexity,” but the demonstration is still impressive, he says.

If AI accelerates the adoption of robotics, it could raise fears of job displacement. The current strike by automobile workers in the US is due in part related to technological trends taking that industry by storm, including electrification and autonomous driving.

Yeung says the robot is still being perfected, but it should eventually load a truck as fast as a trained human. FedEx already uses robotic technology developed by another company, Berkshire Grey, to sort packages inside some facilities. He spent 200 million dollars in these systems in 2022.

Yeung declined to say how many robots FedEx will deploy or how quickly, and data on their reliability is still being collected. But the capabilities demonstrated by Dexterity’s robot should transfer to other tasks so robots can take on more work at FedEx. “This is very important to us,” he says. “We are excited about these next-generation capabilities that enhance our operations.”
