Burning Man festival organizers have announced an “exodus” of thousands of attendees stranded in the Nevada desert after torrential rains turned an event that has become a magnet for tech executives, venture capitalists and social media influencers into a “nightmare” of mud and broken toilets.
“The exodus operations have officially begun. . . The driving ban has been lifted,” organizers of the event in Black Rock City, Nevada said, days after urging attendees to shelter in place and store food and water as planned. roads closed by ever deeper mud away from the headquarters.
About 64,000 people remained in place on Monday afternoon, with waiting times to exit approaching five hours, according to organizers.
The burning of a human effigy and temple that will culminate the annual event is now scheduled for Monday evening.

It draws tens of thousands of attendees who travel by caravan or even private plane to a “playa” to witness a dizzying program of electronic music and light shows, punctuated by a “Man Burn” and similar demolition of a “Chapel of Babel”. .
Organizers say the event aims to “generate a society that connects each individual to their creative powers.”
This year’s Burning Man aimed to celebrate the animal world and challenge the belief that “somehow, despite all evidence to the contrary, humanity is not part of the animal kingdom.”
But heavy rains intervened, turning the normally barren landscape that can accommodate RVs and air-conditioned RVs into a muddy “hellscape,” as one TikTok participant described it, with broken toilets surrounded by fifteen inches of manure.
Notable attendees like comedian Chris Rock and former US Attorney General and current Hogan Lovells partner Neal Katyal walked miles to escape the mud and find road transportation to Reno.
“People are forced to change their flights and work schedules if they can’t work remotely,” Angie Peacock, 44, a holistic health coach from Missouri, told the Financial Times.
Portable toilets are back up and running, but no cleaning facilities, said Peacock, who hasn’t showered in 10 days. Peacock and others in his camp passed the time by playing music and participating in mud runs in the nude.
Music executive Bryan Freeman, 54, and his travel buddy bought a $94,000 RV and drove from Los Angeles to Burning Man, where he celebrated his birthday on the “beautiful” lit-up playa like Times Square.
But that changed on Friday when a deluge of cold rain brought “horrific” and “miserable” conditions, he told the FT.
After the portable toilets overflowed, rumors of illnesses surfaced on social media, prompting Burning Man organizers to claim that “online rumors of communicable diseases in Black Rock City are baseless and false.”
Freeman’s traveling companion had planned to depart on a private jet from Burning Man’s makeshift airfield on Monday, but his flight was delayed until Tuesday.
But he said one of the event’s 10 principles, “radical self-sufficiency,” meant that most attendees brought along enough supplies — including “enough food and alcohol” to last through Monday.
“I’ll be back,” Freeman said. “If you were to ask people here what their biggest fear was, it wouldn’t be that something bad is happening on the playa. . . It would be for this event to disappear ”.
